Wiley S. Churchill (1900-1987) was a prominent Louisiana artist. Signing his work with the pseudonym Zamb, the New Orleans Art League frequently exhibited his art. His Louisiana landscapes and New Orleans cityscapes have been reproduced in several volumes, and area museums often showcase his work.
His watercolor Lazy Fishin’, Bayou Bienvenue, LA, captures the charm of an afternoon on the river; his oil on canvas Côte montagneuse offers a breathtaking view of the interaction between water and sky; and the watercolor New Orleans Opera House reveals the grandeur of the building and the glamour of a night on the town. With paintings such as these, Zamb cemented his reputation as a legendary Louisiana figure.
Zamb also illustrated several books about New Orleans, including several for the renowned entertainer André Cajun (Andrew Jackson Navard). His illustrative style is distinct from that of his paintings. These vivacious pen-and-ink drawings offer a fleeting glimpse into a busy moment in New Orleans. His paintings and pen-and-ink drawings were widely collected in the mid-twentieth century and are prized today for their classic depiction of the New Orleans area.
