Award-winning
bartender Marvin J. Allen prides himself on creating original drinks with
unusual ingredients. He is the bar manager and bartender at the Carousel Bar at
the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, which was named best hotel bar in the city
by Gambit. Named New Orleans Magazine’s Bartender of the Year in
2005, Allen has decades of experience behind the bar and constantly seeks
innovations and refines his skills. He is a founding member of the New Orleans
chapter of the United States Bartenders’ Guild and a USBG certified spirits
professional. He has been featured in numerous publications, including Esquire
and the New Orleans Times-Picayune, where he shares tips and tricks with
his characteristic wit and charm.
Allen
frequently participates and places in cocktail competitions, where the judges
recognize the superiority of his unique drinks. He has placed in the 42 Below
Vodka competition with his Peanut Butter and Jelly Martini and won first place
in the Perfect Vodka Perfect Cup Competition in 2011. Allen’s Southern
Comfortini won second place in the Tales of the Cocktail®
contest in 2003, and his Blushing Southern Belle earned honorable mention in
the same competition in 2004. A recipient of the 2010 City Business Culinary
Connoisseur award, Allen teaches bartending classes that include the history of
mixology and classic New Orleans drinks.
Allen
has worked in the beverage industry for more than twenty years. When he is not
cooking or experimenting with new drinks, he is reading, watching a movie, or
attending a concert. He lives with his dog in Gretna, Louisiana.
