Itty Bitty Betty, the Storytelling Honeybee, collects stories instead of nectar like the other bees. She shares her “beeziness”, taking readers on a narrated journey introducing young and old alike to the real “buzz” on honeybees.
With Betty as a guide, young readers learn that one out of every three mouthfuls of food we eat is a direct result of bee pollination; that honey is the only food made by insects, it never spoils, and is filled with nutrients; and that there are more than three hundred different kinds of honey in the United States alone—pretty heavy stuff for such tiny little insects. Itty Bitty Betty shares information like pollen, scattering facts along with swarming stories, bee folklore, and bee tidbits. Cathy Kaemmerlen provides bee terminology and gives easy-to-understand definitions of bee terms. Featured are several anecdotes about bee behavior, including one from nationally known beekeeper Jim Ovbey giving fun details on swarming bees in search of a new home. Itty Bitty Betty’s stories are illustrated with beautifully painted representations of bees and their habits from Kathy Coates. Filled with interesting facts, this educational adventure from the littlest of bees is sure to delight readers of all ages.
