Freelance travel writer Adrienne Petterson is herself an avid explorer who prefers a meandering train ride through scenic territory to the speed and anonymity of air travel. Raised in South Africa, Ms. Petterson lived for many years in England, which was a convenient home base for her trips around the British Isles and continental Europe. Since moving to the United States, she experienced life in New England while living in Providence, Rhode Island, and then turned her attention westward.
