"An original humorous story about a Cajun, Pierre Lastrapes, who
discovers Spain, meets Columbus, and guides him to the New World (Avery Island
in Louisiana). Lastrapes saves Columbus from the hostile Attakapas Indians, and
Columbus discovers a new crop which he takes back to Spain—hot peppers. Told
in Cajun dialect, this is a fine regional tale."
Library Journal
Cajun Columbusis the story of how Pierre Lastrapes, after exciting
adventures with the Norse Vikings and the Attakapas Indians, crossed the
Atlantic Bayou and guided the explorer Christopher Columbus to a safe landing in
Acadiana in the New World.
Conceived by the author while a student at Grand Coteau, Louisiana, the story
won top honors in a state speech competition. In this new revised edition, the
Cajun dialect is tempered a bit to allow for easier reading. James Rice’s
imaginative illustrations add a delightful dimension to this fun story. Rice is
the author and/or illustrator of numerous other titles including the classic Cajun
Night Before Christmas. |
