French-born artist Sylvaine Sancton is a talented sculptor, painter, and photographer. After beginning her career as the assistant to the artistic director of the Comédie-Française in Paris, Sancton moved to New York City. Wanting to spread her passion for art to the next generation, she taught costume design at Sarah Lawrence College before returning to France. After several years in France working in fields ranging from interior design to sculpting, Sancton said au revoir to Europe and returned to the United States. This time, she was drawn to the lively spirit of New Orleans, where she focused on developing her talents as a photographer and sculptor while venturing into writing.
An accomplished shutterbug, Sancton’s photographs have appeared in Vanity Fair, Time magazine, and Cultural Vistas. A member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the National Audubon Society, and New Orleans Photo Alliance, Sancton frequently displays her art at shows throughout New Orleans. Her work has been featured in NOLA NOW at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans and SCOPE in Miami. Her sculptures are part of the permanent collection at Tulane University.
Sancton received her master’s in fine arts degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. After a life filled with wanderlust, Sancton settled down with her husband in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she has found some of her favorite subjects in the city’s diverse people and animals. |
