Barry Adamson was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1950. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Kansas in 1972. Interested in law, Adamson began studying at UCLA School of Law and soon graduated with a J.D. degree.

After passing the California bar exam in 1975, he practiced law in Los Angeles for several years before moving to Lake Oswego, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. There, he worked at various firms, specializing in appeals and a broad range of civil litigation.

In 1989, Adamson opened his own law firm and focused on appellate work in both state and federal courts. In 1994, he ran for a position at the Oregon Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Oregon State Bar and California State Bar in good standing. He has also been a member of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Cirtuit since 1976 and a member of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon.

Adamson has two daughters and is a longtime musician. He has recorded and produced five CDs of original instrumental guitar music (both electric and acustic). Adamson retired from law in 2006 and lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
