reminiscent of a Sunday homily

Then the cobbler mending Roberto’s shoes lends him a pair of sandals that changes his entire outlook on the world. We read to our children to give them tools to learn, and do well not just in school or a job but life. We read books beyond their reading ability so they can exercise their critical thinking, explore, have adventures, make sense of their lives, and the world around them. Sometimes a truly wonderful book comes along that we share with our children so that they may learn, understand and develop compassion for the human condition. Occasionally we share a heartfelt book to touch on the inner beauty of not only our children, but also others.

Kathleen T. Pelley’s new book The Sandal Artist is one of those special books that belong in our children’s hands.

The Sandal Artist is about a young struggling artist, Roberto. Roberto believes that if he paints only beautiful scenes, he will soon achieve wealth and fame. He refuses to paint shoddy children, old Stefano with his gaunt donkey, or even Anna the penniless woman in the village.

While mending Roberto’s shoes, the cobbler lends him a pair of sandals. The cobbler then whispers: “There are some who say that if you wear another man’s shoes you will see the world with his eyes and feel it with his heart.” Returning to the village Roberto discovers the beauty in his everyday life and begins to paint with new appreciation of those around him.

Warms Hearts

Readers will walk away with a warm feeling after reading The Sandal Artist, by Greenwood Village children’s author, Kathleen T. Pelley. This well-crafted tale goes back to what a children’s picture storybook should be; an entertaining story, with wonderful illustrations, a down to earth theme, and a happy ending. “There are some who say that if you wear another man’s shoes, you will see the world with his eyes and feel it with his heart.” These are the words of the cobbler to Roberto, who aspires to be a “great artist” and only paints things that he considers to be beautiful, but can’t seem to see the beauty that surrounds him in his own life. An old pair of sandals that the cobbler lends him really does change the way that Roberto views life, making him see the beauty of the people that he sees every day and suddenly, he feels that he must paint them. This turns out to be the element of beauty that had been lacking in his work and once he finds it, he becomes the truly great artist that he has strived all his life to be. Pelley’s words are reminiscent of the times of fairytales and fables, and are highlighted by the delightful illustrations of Lois Rosio Sprague. This touching children’s story is sure to warm the hearts of readers, young and old. The Sandal Artist would make a wonderful gift for that special child in all of our lives.

A Delight to the Eye

Every page of The Sandal Artist opens on a delight to the eye. Characters with personality fill the foreground, and details are in the background that make one pause for study. The story walks a fine line between folk legend, village music, and Gospel overtones. It is told in a direct and captivating way, and brings one to a new way of understanding how to see people and things.
