What an achievement for Charles Brooks, editor of all 40 editions of these highly entertaining collections. Sadly, he passed away just as the 2012 Edition was being prepared. His publisher praised him as one “who championed individual rights, personal liberty and one’s responsibility to his fellow man.” This eclectic collection razzes politicians from Obama to Gingrich, Osama to Weiner and a cast of hundreds. If you enjoy politics with a laugh, this is for you.

Charles Brooks's work will be fondly remembered.

Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year 2012 provides a lovely collection of black and white cartoon 'bests' from 2011 from leading editorial cartoonists and requires only a knowledge of the issues to prove satisfying. It charts different points of view in over 400 of the year's best cartoons and also is the last to be edited by Charles Brooks, who passed away as this book as in preparation. His work on all 40 volumes in this annual series will be fondly remembered and this addition to any general or political studies collection will prove popular and fun.

Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year 2012 Edition continues its tradition of collecting the most hard-hitting political and editorial cartoons of 2011. Black-and-white cartoons from all sides of the political spectrum are showcased, grouped by general category and prefaced by a brief summary of important 2011events, the better to put the cartoons in their full context. One particularly biting cartoon shows Uncle Sam reading a history book (“DEMOCRACY: Inspired by Ancient Greece”) and wearing little more than a barrel with the word DEBT on it (ECONOMY: Inspired by Modern Greece”). As solidly engaging as ever, Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year is especially recommended for public library collections and personal browsing – or even gift-giving for savvy followers of current events (although some violent images, such as the cartoons about Osama Bin Laden’s death, may be inappropriate for young readers).

This 40th anniversary edition of The Year in Editorial Cartoons is a fitting tribute to its longtime editor Charles Brooks who passed away as this volume had gone to press. This 2012 edition offers a wide array of journalism's most clever and insightful cartoonists doing what they do best - lampooning the greed, hypocrisy, stupidity and craziness of everyone from society mavens and political leaders to corporate tycoons and school districts run amok. Some of the entries will make you laugh out loud and others might make you squirm. But all of these cartoons will certainly get you to thinking and make great starting points for some lively discussions!
