Marcelle Reese Couhig has observed that younger generations have no concept of dining as an art form. She personally displays a very intimate relationship with cooking, eating, and the "excitement of a stimulating table." The personality of a lovely, opinionated lady who was from Jackson, Louisiana, permeates this recipe collection, becoming a guiding hand in food preparation and presentation.
The recipes consist of simple dishes, such as red beans and rice, and more difficult creations, such as chicken livers in red wine as well as turkey and oyster gumbo. The cookbook covers every imaginable occasion for delicious eating, including brunch, luncheons, teas, and dinner parties both large and small. An excellent guide is included on selecting and using the proper cooking utensils and serving any number of guests with maximum ease and pleasure.
This dining survival kit is packaged in a beautiful double-hinged, wooden box that is available in multiple colors. Convenient removable indexed cards make finding that perfect recipe effortless. This limited quantity item is the ideal gift for anyone who wishes cooking could be simple and is available in red, green, and mustard.
In 1958, Marcelle Reese Couhig and her husband, Robert, purchased the Asphodel Plantation in West Feliciana Parish. With the family occupying one portion of the Asphodel Plantation, the Couhigs opened a restaurant in another part of the house. Mrs. Couhig operated her own gift shop in the plantation, notable for its many unique dollhouses and miniatures. Although the family eventually moved from Asphodel, they continued to operate the restaurant until the late 1980s. Mrs. Couhig is widely remembered in "Asphodel Village" for her original bread recipe, known as Asphodel Bread, which is included in this collection.
