Elvin McDonald takes the reader on a tour of more than thirty of the most beautiful gardens, both public and private, of Savannah, Georgia.
The tour begins with a brief history of Savannah’s gardening tradition. Designed by Gen. James Oglethorpe, the city is divided into squares, with an open space for a park in the center of each square. Surrounded by so much green, the residents of Savannah were inspired to create their own personal gardens.
Divided into sections, each covering a different topic, Small Gardens of Savannah and Thereabouts is filled with lush photographs revealing the gardens’ beauty. Accompanying the descriptions of the gardens are tips and suggestions that readers can use in their own gardens. Most gardens featured are approximately 10’ x 10’, and the tips are especially helpful for making the most of a smaller garden. In an appendix, the author also includes a planting schedule and flower suggestions for the home gardener.
