About the Author
John Chase received his first national attention as a cartoonist for the now-defunct New Orleans States-Item. Born and educated in New Orleans, except for art school at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Chase was also an author, an illustrator for national periodicals and many books, and a popular public speaker--but only when he could not talk himself out of it, he says. Chase’s abilities as a historian, his facility with words, and his able craftsmanship particularly qualify him for this cartoon history, told in words and pictures. The story is historically accurate, but amusing and often downright funny--after all, it is a cartoonist who is telling this story. He had the first regular cartoon on television, which aired on WDSU in New Orleans starting in 1967. He served as president of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists and is the author of five books, including Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children (pb).
