The long, rich history of Louisiana extends far beyond the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Throughout the centuries, these 110 remarkable men and women have stepped forward to take their place in the pages of history.
From Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, who was the first to herald the New World’s abundance, to Albert Barnett Paterson, who was awarded the Times-Picayune Loving Cup in 1944 for his “unselfish service toward bettering the position of New Orleans as an industrial city and as a center of culture,” all of the figures profiled here should be revered for their contributions to the development of the state. Other notables included in this collection include Andrew Jackson, Baroness de Pontalba, and Huey P. Long.
About the Author
Raised in a sawmill town in the backwoods of Mississippi, Clayton Rand worked his way through Mississippi State College by selling peanuts to the students and through Harvard Law School by peddling kitchen utensils to New England housewives. In 1919 Mr. Rand bought his first country newspaper, the Neshoba Democrat, and in his later years was the owner-editor of the Dixie Press in Gulfport, Mississippi. Rand also is the author of Sons of the South, published by Pelican. Although broader in scope, it, too, has been critically acclaimed. The New York Times called it “a most important selection of Southern greats, chosen and dealt with by the admiring heart and able hands of one of their own.”
