Originally published as a two-color edition in 1979, Clovis Crawfish and Etienne Escargot was an immediate hit with fans of the French-speaking animals of the fictional bayou created by children's author Mary Alice Fontenot. This new edition, with four-color and black-and-white illustrations by Scott R. Blazek, brings the familiar characters to life on the page.
Etienne Escargot travels through the bayou country to live with Clovis and his bayou friends. Before arriving at Clovis' home, Etienne releases his eggs in a pile of tiny pearly shells. Suddenly the rain begins to fall, trapping Etienne and his eggs on a mound of mud surrounded by swirling black waters. The bayou friends—Christophe Cricket, Denis Dirt Dauber, Lizette Lizard, and René Rainfrog—enlist the talent of Waldeaux Woodpecker to make a pirogue out of a cypress tree limb. Clovis helps Etienne and his eggs into the boat and guides them to safety.
