Ronald Reagan, the fortieth president of the United States, was often referred to as “the Great Communicator.†His belief in objective value and unalterable truths belies a common sense approach to life and government that was very much appreciated during his lifetime. This compilation of Reagan’s words offers a quick glimpse into his philosophy. His expressions of hope and promise cover a variety of subjects, including pop culture, politics, and humor.

Reagan’s quotations about America have been gathered from a variety of speaking engagements. In his first Inaugural Address in 1981, he declares that a nation’s crisis can be overcome by a country that believes in itself. Speeches to the Republican National Convention, the annual meeting of the American Bar Association, and the Republican National Committee encourage listeners to preserve the American dream, view the country as an eternal light of hope, and take on the responsibility of leadership.

As the first president of the United States with a degree in economics, Reagan was insightful on economic issues and was considered a great asset. A chapter entitled “God†covers not only issues of prayer and faith during trying times, but also a consistent devotion to a higher power. Reagan speaks of eternal optimism in the 1994 speech in which he announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Ronald Reagan, a president whose emphasis on traditional values spoke to the heart of the American people and a man whose words inspired a nation, passed away in 2004.
