If you ask a group of five-year-olds what they want to be when they grow up, one of the first responses you get is “a policeman.” This alphabetical police primer kicks off with A is for academy and ends with Z is for zoom lens. In between, children learn the basics of police work including when the first force began, the equipment used on the job, and some of the different careers in law enforcement.

Whether they want to patrol the beat, search for clues, or partner up with a member of the K-9 unit, children will get a glimpse into their desired profession. With C is for codes, young cadets will learn how cops talk to each other over the radio. Q is for questioning explains the difference between interrogations and interviews, while Y is for yellow crime tape informs them of one of the first things that has to be done at the scene of a crime. Each entry is accompanied by a cat hidden in the illustration to encourage emerging detective skills.

About the Author
Dori Hillestad Butler began her published career writing for magazines, with stories in Highlights for Children, Children’s Digest, and Child Life. She was also a ghostwriter for the popular Sweet Valley Twins Series and continues to ghostwrite for the Boxcar Children Series. She has written numerous children’s and middle-school books since, and several of her books appear on the IRA’s Children’s Choice lists in ten different states. She resides in Coralville, Iowa.

About the Illustrator
Joan C. Waites has illustrated numerous Pelican titles, including Daniel Boone: Trailblazer, The Waving Girl, and Moon’s Cloud Blanket, which was an IRA/CBC Children’s Choice Program 2004 Selection. She has also been awarded the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award (2001) and the Educational Press Award from Hopscotch magazine for her illustrations, and has been featured in Children’s Writer’s and Illustrator’s Market. She lives and works in Silver Spring, Maryland.
