It is no secret that history is written by the victors. Because of this, many people believe that the Civil War was started by the Southern states over the issue of slavery and secession. However, in this informative history, author Gary C. Walker writes a convincing argument that goes against traditional teachings.

Southerners believed that they would benefit from a decentralized government and that their Northern neighbors wanted a stronger centralized government. The Southern economy depended on agriculture, and the plantation owners, planters, and fisherman felt that the industrialized North was passing taxes that were unfair to the South.

This is the true, unbridled story of the Civil War. During the war, more than six hundred Indian men, women, and children were massacred by Union armies, and a Confederate hospital was burned down, killing the wounded soldiers inside. In A General History of the Civil War, Walker gives readers a detailed and unforgettable account of the Civil War from the Southern point of view.
