Gen. Robert E. Lee's courage and steadfastness, fierce temper, and intense personality are already well-known, but what is less-known are his impressive acts of chivalry, compassion shown towards his enemies, his fondness for animals, and his tenderness towards family and friends.
Serving as a perfect companion to his first compilation, Robert E. Lee's Lighter Side, this collection includes letters, diary excerpts, and touching stories from Lee himself, as well as his wife, children, students, and strangers who recorded his acts of kindness. This is not a book about Lee's sentimentality or weakness, but serves instead to offer surprising glimpses at his more merciful side.
Chapters include examples of Lee's expressions of sensitivity towards family, fellow soldiers, slaves, and others, documenting the full humanity of this complex man.
