This is a report of the Joint Select Committee of Congress’s inquiry into the condition of affairs in the late insurrectionary states. Published in 1872, it is a verbatim account of hearings held on conditions, especially race relations, in several Southern states. The states included are: Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Alabama. There was a special emphasis on the Ku Klux Klan.
There are extensive statistics related to the economic and social conditions of the states.
