Noteworthy Events

SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance) Fall Trade Show took place this year from Thursday, September 7, through Sunday, September 10, at the Gaylord Palms Convention Center and Resort in Orlando, Florida. Among those attending were author Jan Day and illustrator Janeen Mason who showcased their collaborative efforts, including their latest book, Kissimmee Pete, Cracker Cow Hunter (9781589803251, $15.95). Jan is always excited to work with Mason and is proud to sit side by side with her as a fellow author. Janeen signed posters promoting her latest book, Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles (9781589804340, $15.95), which was a solo endeavor.




The month of September is officially Pirate  blockbuster hit Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest—the epic second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, starring Johnny Depp. A sure fan of the picture, Terry Breverton, author of three of Pelican’s pirate titles, has provided background for The History Channel Program "Caribbean Pirates." Author Jan Day and illustrator Janeen Mason got a jump on the pirate festivities by participating in a signing event at Barnes & Noble in Jensen Beach, Florida. The team judged a costume contest, gave out prizes, and read from two of their titles, The Pirate, Pink (9781565548794, $15.95) and Pirate Pink and Treasures of the Reef (9781589800861, $15.95), to a group of around two hundred fans.


Effective August 29, 2006, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued to Pelican Publishing Company, Inc., a registration for the mark Cajun Night Before Christmas®. With the recent anniversary of Katrina, St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana, like many other areas along the Gulf Coast, is steadily regaining its population.  The 2006 Crown Awards was an exciting event for Darlene Neptune, author of Fanny Crosby Still Lives (9781589801301, $19.95). A film based on Neptune’s fictionalized biography placed first for best documentary, first for best film, second for best screenplay, and second for best drama. The Crown Awards are designed to recognize excellence in production and content of films and videos that are created to reflect Christian values in a secular world and are a part of the International Christian Visual Media Conference.

Bev Shaffer’s Brownies to Die For! (9781589800960, $15.99) recently placed first in the cookbook category at the 2006 Iowa State Fair.

Author Appearances

Beverly Alfeld, author of The Jamlady Cookbook (9781589802353, $35.00), appeared as a guest on Stirrin’ It Up with Chef John Folse & Company, a radio show broadcast throughout Louisiana. The hour-long segment aired on Saturday, August 12, featuring Alfeld as their special "guest from the world of food."

The Barnes & Noble Educator’s Week is an event that will be celebrated across the country. From Saturday, September 30, through Saturday, October 8, individual Barnes & Noble stores honor prekindergarten through twelfth-grade educators by offering them a discount on classroom purchases. Teachers and librarians are also invited to an educator reception to hear presentations on new book titles and learn about trends in educational publishing. Participating authors will include Una Belle Townsend, Greg Watkins, Neila Skinner Petrick, Melanie Chrismer, and David Davis.
