Daggi Wallace, illustrator of Katherine Stinson Otero: High Flyer (9781589803688, $15.95), presented five time Grammy award-winner Buddy Guy with a portrait. Wallace was commissioned to paint "Legends," a portrait of the Hall of Fame blues legend, as a present for his seventy-first birthday. "Legends" will hang in Guy’s Chicago blues club of the same name.

Noteworthy Events

Leah Chase, author of And Still I Cook (9781565548237, $23.00) and The Dooky Chase Cookbook (9780882896618, $23.00), reopened her restaurant, Dooky Chase, on Tuesday, September 18. The long awaited opening marked the last of the favorite New Orleans restaurants to come back after Hurricane Katrina. Open for take-out service only, it will fully reopen as soon as it is adequately staffed.

Bob Artley, author of Christmas on the Farm (9781589801080, $20.00), Living with Pigs (9781589801042, $10.95 pb), and Once Upon A Farm (9781565547537, $21.95), published by Pelican, celebrated his ninetieth birthday in August. He is working on Memoirs of a Farm Kitchen, expected to be released in 2008.

An interview with James Everett Kibler, author of Memory’s Keep (9781589803718, $22.00) is available for viewing at www.GPB.org. The interview originally aired in August on a program entitled, "Cover to Cover," which is broadcast by Georgia Public Radio. In the hour-long interview, Kibler discusses his inspiration for the novel, the second in a series, which addresses themes of agrarianism, spirituality, family, and finding common ground.

      A documentary of Kibler’s book Our Father’s Fields: A Southern Story (9781589801387 $19.95 pb) has been in production for ten months and is expected to be completed in fall 2007. The one-hour-fifty-minute film is based on the work of nonfiction about the two hundred-year history of a South Carolina plantation family. The book was the recipient of the 1999 Fellowship of Southern Writers Award for Nonfiction.

 

Jeff Dwyer, author of the newly released Ghost Hunter’s Guide to New Orleans (9781589804081, $17.95 pb), will give two interviews on Halloween Day. WRNO (The New 99.5 FM) is a talk radio show broadcast out of New Orleans, Louisiana. KFOG is broadcast out of San Francisco, California.

Little Thumb (9781565547544, $7.95 pb), by Wanda Dionne and illustrated by Jana Dillon, will appear in the October issue of Parents Magazine. It will be featured in a book sidebar for a story on helping kids beat baby habits, such as thumb-sucking.

Volumes I, II, and V of the New Orleans Architecture Series will be displayed in the October issue of Cottage Living magazine. They will be included on a source page of New Orleans items. Pelican will donate ten percent of each book sold to Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans.

 


Jerald Horst, coauthor of Angler’s Guide to Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico (9781589803886, $35.00), will be mentioned in an article about Louisiana authors in the October issue of Inside Northside.



Bev Alfeld
