Noteworthy Events

Jeff Dwyer, author of Ghost Hunter’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area (9781589802896, $14.95 pb) as well as the forthcoming Ghost Hunter’s Guide to Los Angeles (9781589804043, $14.95 pb) and Ghost Hunter’s Guide to New Orleans (9781589804081, $17.95 pb), has been chosen to appear on a television game show. Dwyer serves as an expert for NBC’s 1 vs. 100; the episode will air December 1 at 8:00 p.m. (E.S.T).

Bev Shaffer, author of Brownies to Die For! (9781589803824, $24.95), kicked off Halloween on Cleveland, Ohio’s FOX 8 morning show by preparing a pumpkin crème brûlée for the "Food Request Live" segment. Always cautious in the kitchen, she was dressed as a firefighter, of course.

The Children’s Book Council has selected two Pelican titles to air on the program "KidStuff," on Martha Stewart Living Radio, Sirius 112. Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton’s Red, White, and Blue (9781589800670, $15.95) was chosen for the patriotism book category, and Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles (9781589804340, $15.95), by Janeen Mason, was chosen as an evolution book. A short script of each title will air on Tuesday, November 21, to promote educational books for children.

	Melanie Chrismer, author of the *Phoebe Clappsaddle Series*, attended the Texas State Reading Association’s 35^th Annual State Literacy Conference in Austin. On Friday, November 10, she served as a speaker on the topic of "Literacy and Liberty: Texas Traditions."
	Dr. Steven L. Layne was a featured speaker at the California Reading Association 40^th Annual Conference in Sacramento. His keynote address, "Balcony People," was given in the first general session. His other speaking topics included "Successful Strategies for Building Lifetime Readers," "Using Children’s Books to Excite Young Readers," and "Dynamic Read Aloud Programs and Titles That Work." David Davis was a featured speaker at the Arkansas Reading Convention in Little Rock. He gave a solo presentation entitled "Popeye for Breakfast: The Life of a Writer and Cartoonist." He also gave a joint talk with featured speaker Jan Peck, "Partners in Rhyme—or, Books, Alive and Kicking!" Author John R. Kemp and artist Rolland Golden appeared at the New Orleans Museum of Art Sunday, October 22, to sign copies of their collaboration, *Rolland Golden: The Journeys of a Southern Artist* (9781589802902, $60.00). A few pieces of Golden’s artwork were exhibited at the museum. The rest of the collection, representing the artist’s impressions of Hurricane Katrina, will be displayed as a major exhibit after its completion next year.
Donald L. Gilmore, author of *Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas Border* (9781589803299, $29.95), will participate in a speaking engagement to a Civil War Round Table in Harrisonville, Missouri. His speech, "Unbridled Violence on the Western Border," will be taking its tour across the border, as he will also be speaking to the Civil War Round Table in Mission, Kansas.
Just in time for the holidays, the Savvy Gourmet, a recreational cooking school, is hosting celebrated chefs and authors.
