Noteworthy Events

 Leah Chase, author of And Still I Cook ($23.00) and The Dooky Chase Cookbook ($23.00), was one of New Orleans’ unique characters who appeared on the first episode of "America the Wright Way," on the Travel Channel. The show premiered on Monday, April 14 and attempted to capture the heart of the city.

Leah’s Dooky Chase Restaurant has not been fully operational since Hurricane Katrina damaged the building in 2005. An autobiography of the beloved Louisiana native, Leah Chase: Listen, I Say Like This ($23.00), by Carol Allen, is also available from Pelican.


A Buford Pusser Memorial Festival will take place May 21 through May 24 in Adamsville, Tennessee. A biography of the legendary sheriff Pusser, who became the subject of four feature films and a television series, is forthcoming from Pelican. Walking On: A Daughter’s Journey with Legendary Sheriff Buford Pusser ($23.00), by his only child, Dwana, will be available in fall 2008.


Devil’s Breath Volcano ($15.95), by Richard Trout, is one of only five novels selected for the National Geographic Society’s JASON Project. This is Trout’s second young adult title chosen for the environmentally educational program. Cayman Gold: Lost Treasure of Devils Grotto ($15.95) was selected in 2006.


The Magic Box ($12.95), by Olga Cossi, will be featured on the Build-a-Bear Workshop® Web site throughout the month of May. The book, about a young basketball player who must choose between smoking and the sport she loves, has been chosen as a Spotlight book for May’s "Living a Healthy Lifestyle" theme.


Daggi Wallace, illustrator of Katherine Stinson Otero: High Flyer ($15.95), will be exhibiting her surfer series at Bistango Gallery Restaurant in Irvine, CA. A reception on May 17 kicks off the exhibit, which will be on display through September.


Jack M. Kneece
, author of Ghost Army of World War II ($24.95), will be interviewed by Susan F. Benjamin on "The Greater Voice," an Internet radio program, in May. The podcast will be available at http://susanfbenjamin.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=12.


Bev Shaffer, author of Brownies to Die For! ($24.95) and Mustard Seed Market & Café Natural Foods Cookbook ($29.95), attended the International Association of Culinary Professionals Conference in New Orleans. She attended the conference after signing books at Hubbell Public Library for a fundraising event in the city. Shaffer, an Ohio native and culinary instructor, promotes her books and appearances at www.bevshaffer.com.


Kitty Morse, author of The California Farm Cookbook ($26.95), gave a cooking demonstration at Vista Farmers Market in Vista, CA, in late April. Her book includes anecdotes and recipes from local growers at the market.


Rose Mula, author of If These Are Laugh Lines, I’m Having Way Too Much Fun ($12.95 pb), gave an interview for book lady Bonnie Blose at the Accessible World Web site.
