Mother’s Day is May 8

Give Mom a chuckle with Deb DiSandro’s Tales of a Slightly Off Supermom (9781589800700), subtitled Fighting for Truth, Justice, and Clean Underwear!, this collection of essays takes a humorous look at motherhood.

Don’t forget your grandmother this Mother’s Day. Marla Brooks pays homage to her family’s favorite dishes with How to Cook Like a Jewish Grandmother (9781589802155), while Ibbie Ledford and Johnnie Countess celebrate their roles in Stories from the Hearts of Two Grandmas (9781565542143).

Fate Did Not Let Me Go: A Mother’s Farewell Letter (9781589801530), by Valli Ollendorff, would also make an excellent Mother’s Day gift. This small-format hardcover book, illustrated with both family portraits and evocative new photographs, contains a letter, written on the eve of Ollendorff’s death in a concentration camp, that is a moving testament to maternal love. The companion documentary, featuring the voices of Martin Sheen and Liv Ullman, has been broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. The Department of the Army will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Week by airing the film twice a day May 1-5 on Channel 42, the closed circuit cable channel for active duty military, military family members, and civilians.
