Phil Sandusky, author of Painting Katrina (9781589804777, $19.95), was interviewed by Workshop Magazine, and his interview will be featured in the spring issue, available on Tuesday, March 11. After returning to his New Orleans home in the summer of 2005, Sandusky began recording the devastation through plein-air paintings, and he added the works to a previous collection he had been doing of the city. Sandusky’s forthcoming book, Jacksonville Through a Painter’s Eyes, will be available in the fall of 2008.

Dr. Milburn Calhoun recently spoke to the Louisiana chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Part of the talk included a review of the book Weep Not for Me, Dear Mother (9781565543904, $14.95 pb), by Elizabeth Whitley Roberson. Roberson’s neighbor rescued a stack of aged letters from a pile of trash in Atlanta, Georgia. The letters were written by a young soldier, Eli Pinson Landers, during the Civil War. Landers wrote to his mother about his life in battles in Gettysburg, Manassas, Antietam, and Chickamauga. His letters are used in the audiotapes available at Antietam and First Manassas battlefields.

Dr. Calhoun was recently awarded the Rivet Sponsor Certificate of Participation by the Minnesota Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and the Red Tail Project. The award was given to recognize his generous contribution to the restoration of the P-51C Mustang, the signature aircraft used by the Tuskegee Airmen who helped change aviation history. Pelican has published two children’s books and one adult book on the subject. The Tuskegee Airmen Story (9781589800052, $15.95), Tuskegee Airmen: American Heroes (9781565549944, $14.95), and Black Knights: The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen (9781565548282, $23.00) are all by Lynn Homan and Thomas Reilly.

After Rose’s instructional "Cartooning for Kids" program, the teacher thanked him for coming and said how much she enjoyed his program. Then one third-grader from the audience raised her hand and told Rose, "You’re better than cable TV!"

The discussion was included in the Wednesday, February 6, 2008, edition of their Children’s Book Podcast Just One More Book—"a podcast about the children’s books we love and why we love them."
