Noteworthy Events

Leah Chase, author of The Dooky Chase Cookbook (9780882896618, $23.00) and And Still I Cook (9781565548237, $23.00), received a $175,000 grant from Starbucks to rebuild the Dooky Chase Restaurant. Chase, whose business and home were both badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, has been living in a FEMA trailer next to her restaurant, which she hopes to reopen in April.

James Everett Kibler, author of Child to the Waters (9781589800953, $19.00), Walking Toward Home (9781589802261, $22.00), and Memory’s Keep (9781589803718, $22.00), gave a signing for all of his books on February 15 at Jackson Street Books in Athens, Georgia. Kibler has been nominated for the 2006 Georgia Author of the Year Award.


Another of Kibler’s works, Our Fathers’ Fields: A Southern Story (9781589801387, $19.95 pb), will be the basis for an hour and a half documentary that is now being filmed in South Carolina. This is the story of the Hardy Plantation from its founding in 1898 to the present day.


Pegasus Yayincilik has purchased the Turkish-language rights to Talk Your Way to the Top (9781565544260, $22.00), by Kevin Hogan, and Selling Yourself to Others: The New Psychology of Sales  (9781589800076, $22.00), by Kevin Hogan and William Horton. Pelican has approved Remzi Kitabevi A.S. as its distributor to the book trade in Turkey.


The Pub Hub Literary Agency, in coordination with Kunna Publishing Co., has purchased the Korean-language rights to Tuning In: A Guide to Effective Listening (9780882894393, $14.95 pb), by Robert Maidment.

 

Pelican publicist Amy Kirk is serving on the board of directors of the 21st annual Tennessee Williams Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana. Pelican authors will complement the festival with a variety of stories, discussions, and local cuisine.

 

 

Peggy Scott Laborde, author of Canal Street: New Orleans’ Great Wide Way (9781589803374, $39.95), will participate in a literary panel about her new book, which covers two hundred years of history on the favored thoroughfare. She will also be serving as moderator for a talk with Chef John Besh, coauthor of The New Orleans Program: Eat, Exercise, and Enjoy Life (9781589803442, $23.00).

 

"Born on the Bayou: Chef John Besh Discusses Louisiana Gourmet," a special event at the Tennessee Williams Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, features the 2006 Iron Chef. Besh will discuss utilizing, preserving, and reinventing the best of Louisiana’s culinary resources to create New Orleans cuisine. He will also conduct a cooking demonstration and provide the audience with samples from his acclaimed establishment, Restaurant August. Besh will lead a discussion about his life in southern Louisiana, his worldwide culinary experiences, his post-Katrina reopening, and his passion for using local ingredients.

Celebrated chef Leah Chase, author of The Dooky Chase Cookbook (9780882896618, $23.00) and And Still I Cook (9781565548237, $23.00), will participate in a discussion about regional confections. Samples prepared from Kit Wohl’s new cookbook, New Orleans Classic Desserts (9781589804449, $14.95), will be available.

Joshua Clark, editor of a new collection of essays entitled Louisiana in Words (9781589804296, $19.95 pb), will be featured in a literary panel on April 1 at the Cabildo in Jackson Square. A launch of the book will feature nearly twenty venues and dozens of contributors.

Richard G. Williams, Jr., author of The Maxims of Robert E. Lee for Young Gentlemen (9781589803107, $12.95 pb), has been asked to write an essay for Washington & Lee University’s Kappa Alpha Order journal. In celebration of Lee’s 200th birthday, the fraternity will publish just four essays in their official journal. Williams will also give a speech entitled "Lee Chapel" at Liberty University’s eleventh annual Civil War symposium. Held March 23-24 in Lynchburg, Virginia, this year’s theme is Robert E. Lee in Life & Legend.

Janeen Mason, author and illustrator of Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles (9781589804340, $15.95), has been chosen by the president of the Florida senate to serve on the Florida Arts Council. The children’s book author and illustrator is one of fifteen people selected who will collaboratively work to provide more creative communities in the state of Florida. Mason is also the illustrator of Kissimmee Pete, Cracker Cow Hunter (9781589803251, $15.95), The Pirate, Pink (9781565548794, $15.95), and Pirate Pink and Treasures of the Reef (9781589800861, $15.95).

Grady’s in the Silo (9781589800984, $15.95), by Una Belle Townsend and illustrated by Bob Artley, is featured in the March 2007 issue of MetroFamily Magazine. The monthly book column highlights books that have been nominated for the Oklahoma Book Award.
