Author Signings and Noteworthy Events

Kathleen Calhoun Nettleton, director of Promotions at Pelican, was interviewed for the February 2006 issue of Book Business. Mrs. Nettleton discussed how Hurricane Katrina impacted Pelican’s employees and business structure and provided useful tips on how to keep the lines of communications open after natural disasters cause setbacks in business.
 

With hopes of restocking the home libraries of New Orleans listeners, WWNO, a local New Orleans radio station, and the New Orleans Gulf South Booksellers Association have compiled a list of twenty-five "classic New Orleans books" for the station to donate to radio callers. The collection includes three titles from Pelican Publishing, Time and Place in New Orleans: Past Geographies in Present Day (9781565549913), by Richard Campanella, Etouffée, Mon Amour: The Great Restaurants of New Orleans (9781565549265), by Kerri McCaffety, and Moon’s Cloud Blanket (9781565549227)--a Houma Indian tale about surviving flooding--by Rose Anne St. Romain.

Author Joe Novara will be at Barnes and Noble in Tampa, Florida, on March 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. reading from his book, Wa-Tonka! Camp Cowboys (9781589803541). Novara, who included a useful study guide in his book, will discuss the importance of reading and writing with children.

Jude W. Theriot will be at the Market Basket on Nelson Road in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Saturday, March 4, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will cook two of his favorite recipes from The 100 Greatest Cajun Recipes (9781589803053). Chef Theriot will sign his cookbook before and after the cooking demonstration.

The Joliet Young Author Conference will be held on March 11 in Joliet, Illinois. The theme of this year’s event is "Reach for the world--READ." Author Steven L. Layne and illustrator Chuck Galey are giving multiple presentations about their book, My Brother Dan’s Delicious (9781589800717), a story about how Joey convinces monsters that his brother Dan would make a tastier supper than he.

 

Author Ann Parr and illustrator Kathryn Breidenthal will be promoting the release of Gordon Parks: No Excuses (9781589804111) with a book signing at Watermark Books in Wichita, Kansas, on Sunday, March 12, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition to the narrative and black-and-white illustrations, the book features many of Gordon Parks’ most famous photographs.

The Illinois Reading Conference will take place from March 15 to March 18 in Springfield, Illinois. Steven L. Layne, the president of the Illinois Reading Council and the author of numerous Pelican titles, including his newest release, Mergers (9781589801837), will attend. Also attending will be Frank Blazek, author of Phil and His Fabulous Feathers (9781589802803), and Laura Crawford, author of The Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving from A to Z (9781589802384).

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, Davis-Kidd Booksellers in Memphis, Tennessee, is hosting author James Cantrell, who will be signing How Celtic Culture Invented Southern Literature (9781589803305) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on March 16.

Richard Jones, author of Supper at Richard’s Place: Recipes from the New Southern Table (9781589802995), and Ben Smith, author of Tsunami Restaurant Cookbook (9781589802827), have been selected to participate in The Book and The Cook Festival in Philadelphia from March 17 to March 26. This year Jack’s Firehouse Restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will host Richard Jones, and Meridith’s Restaurant in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, will host Ben Smith.

The first signing for David Davis’s newest release, Texas Zeke and the Longhorn (9781589803480), is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, at Brystone’s Children’s Books in Watauga, Texas. Storytime is at 10:30 a.m. and book signings begin at 12:30 p.m.

Pelican Publishing is proud to announce that artwork from Feliciana Feydra Leroux: A Cajun Tall Tale (9781589802865), illustrated by Cat Bowman Smith and written by Tynia Thomassie, will be a part of This Land Is Our Land: Discovering America and the World through Original Illustrations from Children’s Books. The illustrations representing the state of Louisiana will be on display at the Meridian Cafritz Galleries in Washington, D.C. The exhibit continues through April 30, 2006.

The Louisiana Library Conference will be held from March 28 to March 30 at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana.
