Baumgarten, a multidecorated veteran, landed on the Dog Green sector of Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. He was wounded five times in thirty-two hours of combat. He serves as a tour speaker on the beaches of Normandy, France, on the anniversary day each year.

A May 18 ceremony dedicated a Louisiana Historical Highway marker to Pelican’s home community of McDonoghville, Louisiana. The marker attributes the town’s 1815 founding to John McDonogh, a philanthropist who willed his fortune to build twenty-eight public schools in the state. Jeanne Frois documents philanthropists, historians, authors, and other notable individuals who have influenced Louisiana’s heritage and history in Louisianans All ($11.95), a middle reader novel.
