IPPY AWARD
The Jamlady Cookbook
(9781589802353), by Beverly Ellen Schoonmaker Alfeld, received an honorable mention in the cookbook category in the ninth annual Independent Publisher Book Awards. In addition to working on her upcoming book about pickles, Mrs. Alfeld is starting a monthly column in Fruit Growers Magazine published by the California Rare Fruit Growers.


SAVANNAH SIGNINGS
Jeffrey Eley will sign copies of Savannah Sketchbook (9781589801028) on June 11 at Sam’s Wholesale Clubs in both Savannah and Hilton Head. Savannah Sketchbook features artwork by students from the Savannah college of Art and Design and a foreword written by singer and frequent visitor Tony Bennett. Midwest Book Review described this collection as “an amazingly unforgettable tour of a charming American town, blending talent and love for scenery into a beautiful whole.”


PIRATE BOOK IN THE TOP FORTY
Black Bart Roberts: The Greatest Pirate of Them All (9781589802339), by Terry Breverton, appears on the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association list of Young Adult Top Forty or so Nonfiction Titles 2004. That organization praises the book as “one that will grip your attention and not let go to the final gunshot.”


AUTHOR OF THE MONTH
Lynne Sheffield Simmons is Author of the Month in Texas Barnes & Noble stores. UGLESICHS IN DC
John Uglesich
, author of Uglesich’s Restaurant Cookbook (9781589802094), and his father, Anthony, will participate in the Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Festival as part of the Food Culture USA exhibition. The Uglesichs, who recently closed their renowned New Orleans restaurant, will be demonstrating their signature dishes on June 24 and 25.

RICE BOOK HONORED
Too Tall Thomas Rides the Grub Line (9781589801776), written and illustrated by James Rice, has received an honorable mention for The June Franklin Naylor Award for the Best Book for Children on Texas History from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Rice’s last book Santa’s Revenge (9781589802506) will be published this fall.


BIOGRAPHY OF BONES HOOKS PUBLISHED
Bones Hooks: Pioneer Negro Cowboy (9781589802940), by Bruce G. Todd, is the life story of the legendary black broncobuster who became a respected civic leader in Amarillo. Mr. Todd will promote his new book in Amarillo at the Juneteenth celebration parade on Saturday, June 18 in Thompson Park, at the Amarillo United Citizen Black Historical Culture Center on June 19, and at Barnes & Noble on July 2. The book has already earned praise; author and historian Dr. Charles R. Townsend notes, “this book concerning Bones Hooks and Amarillo will be interesting and rewarding reading.”


JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER CAMP

Anyone who is beginning tennis lessons this summer will appreciate the lively illustrations and helpful hints in Playing Tennis with Bouncy and Fuzzy (9780882896540) by Ivo Barbic. Mr. Barbic, a former professional player who is now the tennis director at North Fulton Tennis Center in Atlanta, uses the appealing tennis ball-shaped characters of Bouncy and Fuzzy to explain the game’s rules, etiquette, and techniques.
ART AUCTION:
Deborah Ousley Kadair, author and illustrator of There Was an Ol’ Cajun (9781565549173) and Grandma’s Gumbo (9781589801332), has created a piece of original art, based on the letter “e,” for the Letters of Imagination silent auction to raise money for the Children’s Book Council literacy projects and for the American Library Association scholarship funds. Peter J. Welling, whose latest book is Joe Van Der Katt and the Great Picket Fence (9781589802810), is another of the one hundred and fifty artists, including nine Caldecott Award winners, who donated their work to the auction, to be held June 25-27 at the ALA Conference in Chicago.

OTHER BOOKSIGNINGS
Jim Fraiser, historian, actor, lawyer, and writer, will sign his books at two Sam’s Wholesale Clubs in Mississippi--in Jackson on June 25 and in Gulfport on July 9. Mr. Fraiser is the author of The Majesty of Eastern Mississippi and the Coast (9781589801585), The Majesty of the Mississippi Delta (9781565548695), and Mississippi River Country Tales (9781565547872). This fall, Pelican will publish his newest book, The Majesty of Mississippi (9781589803398), co-authored by Steven Brooke and featuring photographs by West Freeman, Rick Guy, and Steven Brooke. Joel L. Fletcher will discuss and sign his first book Ken and Thelma: The Story of A Confederacy of Dunces (9781589802964) at Book People in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, June 18. Mr. Fletcher’s memoir of his friendship with the Tooles has received rave reviews. Most recently The Forum in Shreveport, Louisiana, called it “a very important work, containing much valuable insight into the life and mind of John Toole and also, very importantly, that of Thelma Ducoing Toole.”
James Bollich, author of Bataan Death March: A Soldier’s Story (9781589801677), will talk about his experiences during World War II at the New Orleans Naval Base on July 1 and at the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans on July 2. Mr. Bollich’s account of his survival as a prisoner of war in the Pacific theater has earned excellent reviews. The reviewer for the veterans’ magazine The Quan states, “I salute the author for writing his story; doing so must have caused him many a restless night and not a few tears. He has served all his fellow POWs well by writing this book. I recommend it to anyone.” Gaspar J. “Buddy” Stall will sign his books, Buddy Stall’s Louisiana Potpourri (9781565544277) and Buddy Stall’s New Orleans (9780882898131), at the Sam’s Wholesale Clubs in Metairie and Kenner on June 4 and at the store’s Harvey location on June 11.
