Janice Shay, author of Savannah Classic Desserts (9781589805460, $15.95) and Charleston Classic Desserts (9781589805453, $15.95), has been chosen by The Good Cook Book Club to have her two cookbooks- as seen in Pelican's spring 2008 catalog- featured together on their site. Shay's cookbooks will be featured alternately with Beverly Ellen Schoonmaker Alfeld's Pickles To Relish (9781589804890, $24.95).

St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans' famous uptown thoroughfare, has been named one of the top ten avenues in the nation by the American Planning Association. Rose Madeline Mula, author of the newly reprinted If These are Laugh Lines, I'm Having Way Too Much Fun (9781589803770, $12.95 pb), will be interviewed on the Jordan Rich Show. The radio program is broadcast on WBZ AM in Boston. The interview will air at midnight on Friday, January 25.

Thomas Forehand, Jr., author of Robert E. Lee's Softer Side (9781589805040, $12.95 pb), will do a portrayal of Lee at the old delegate's hall in Richmond on Saturday, January 20. He will lecture on Lee's sense of humor. In 2004, Forehand received the Robert E. Lee Award from the Tennessee Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for his authentic portrayals of Lee. He is also the author of Robert E. Lee's Lighter Side: The Marble Man's Sense of Humor (9781589803558, $12.95 pb), which explains Lee's sense of humor.

Workshop Magazine, a submagazine of American Art Magazine, is planning an article on Phil Sandusky, the author of Painting Katrina (9781589804777, $19.95). A reporter spent the day with the author asking questions about his artwork. Sandusky's latest book features plein air images of New Orleans before and after the 2005 hurricane. His first book, New Orleans en Plein Air (9781589801417, $35.00), is also available through Pelican.

Richard Trout, author of The MacGregor Family Adventure Series, has received a rave review- from a fifth grade reader and his mother! An email to Trout reads, "Our school librarian discovered your books at a workshop this fall. She purchased the entire series. My son is a 5th grader who loves to read, but is a bit picky about his reading material. He has already read the entire series!!! He said they were the best books he has ever read. Bev Shaffer, author of Mustard Seed Market & Cafe Natural Foods Cookbook (9781589804654, $29.95), will give a workshop at the James Beard House in New York on Saturday, January 12. Shaffer, who is also the author of the dessert cookbook Brownies to Die For! (9781589803824, $24.95), will host a tasting that includes Tangy Cheese Soup with Maple and Pear Relish and Brownie Bites with Caramel Sauce Drizzle.

Michael Chandler, author of Dreamweaving: The Secret to Overwhelming Your Business Competition (9781589801004, $23.00), was interviewed by The Small Business Advocate in December. Chandler and national radio host Jim Blasingame discussed communicating with customers. New on the Accelerated Reader List

Librarian's Night Before Christmas (9781589803367, $15.95), by David Davis and illustrated by Jim Harris, is the story of how a librarian's wish for new books and building renovations comes true on Christmas Eve. This is an entry in Pelican's famous Night Before Christmas Series.

On A Solemn Note

Senior Retired Marine Col. Jefferson DeBlanc passed away due to complications with pneumonia. DeBlanc was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery in World War II. He also received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with four gold stars. His autobiography, The Guadalcanal Air War: Col. Jefferson DeBlanc's Story (9781589805873, $24.95), will be available in spring 2008.

An interview with Leah Chase, author of the Dooky Chase Cookbook (9780882896618, $23.00), will appear in the January issue of Where Magazine.


A letter by James R. Hall, author of Den of Misery: Indiana's Civil War Prison (9781589803510, $25.00), is included in the Mail Call section of the January issue of the Civil War Times. In answer to a previous question regarding the conditions of Northern prisons, Hall responds with a breakdown of why "Camp Morton (in Indiana) was one of the most inhumane of all Civil War prisons, North or South."


Pennsylvania Dutch Night Before Christmas
(9781565547216, $15.95), by Chet Williamson, was mentioned in the December 14 newsletter "Shelf Awareness." The Moravian Book Shop in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has been in business since 1745. The shop's booksellers enjoy hand-selling Williamson's picture book to the tourists of "Christmas City." Williamson is also the author of Pennsylvania Dutch Alphabet (9781589804968, $15.95). He signed both books at the shop during the Christmas season.


A feature story about a documentary based on Valli Ollendorf's Fate Did Not Let Me Go: A Mother's Farewell Letter (9781589801530, $5.95) appeared on the front page of Hatzofeh in December. One of Israel's most prestigious daily newspapers, Hatzofeh covered the special Israeli exhibit of the documentary at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust museum. Articles also appeared in The Jewish Daily Post and the Mekor Rishon, a Hebrew daily paper.


The holiday issue of Indian River, a regional magazine that covers Indian River County, Florida, published an interview with artist and author Janeen Mason in its Portrait of the Artist section. Mason received the 2007 Maritime Literature Award for her picture book Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles (9781589804340, $15.95).
