A NOTE ABOUT HURRICANE KATRINA

Pelican appreciates the kind words, thoughts, and prayers sent to us during this tragic time.

Our warehouse suffered roof damage, and we are diligently working to restock books damaged or destroyed by rainwater. As we all work together toward the recovery of the Gulf Coast region, we want everyone to know that it was your numerous heartfelt notes and e-mails that helped us through this tough time. Here is one we would like to share with you:

Dear Dr. Calhoun,

I don’t think I can ever understand completely what a devastation Hurricane Katrina was for your family, friends and your business. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all you did (and are doing I’m sure) to help Pelican get back on its feet. I was amazed at your response to the New Year’s Eve fire (I had just come on as a new Pelican author that year), and even more at your courage and determination after the floods. Please know how grateful I am and how proud to be a part of Pelican.

--Lesley Pratt Bannatyne, author of A Halloween Reader (9781589801769)

PELICAN
CARES

Hurricane Katrina directly affected several of our Pelican authors, some of whom lost everything while others suffered extensive roof damage. Since to most writers the most tragic thing is the loss of their libraries, Becky Rolland, promotions assistant and one of Pelican’s newest employees, has initiated a nationwide campaign with the National Writer’s Union in order to help writers replenish their libraries. The mission of the Gulf Coast Writer Relief is to give writers the opportunity to help fellow writers by donating new or used books and gift cards to various bookstores. For more information on this campaign, please e-mail Becky at brolland@pelicanpub.com.

In November, Jim Fraiser of the Northside Sun brought the new Fall 2005 line of Pelican’s children’s books direct to the source for review. The fourth-grade class of Saint Andrews in Jackson, Mississippi, were happy to oblige by giving their opinions of which book should get the highest rating. And the winners are Kissimmee Pete, Cracker Cow Hunter (9781589803251), by Jan Day with illustrations by Janeen Mason, and Great Irish Legends for Children (97815898033459), by Yvonne Carroll with illustrations by Robin Lawrie. But the surprise of the day was that when children were asked what book they wanted to take home with them, they overwhelmingly voted for Santa’s Revenge (9781589802506), written and illustrated by James Rice.

What the critics are saying about Pelican titles:

The Influence of Air Power Upon History (9781589800342) by Walter J. Boyne:
“A retired Air Force officer and B-52 pilot, Walter Boyne has written more than forty books on air power and aviation. In this volume he presents an in-depth survey of the men, machines and theories that have shaped the perception of air power since the first use of the balloon in combat. . . . Anyone interested in air power and how it has influenced history and complemented the development of other technologies of the twentieth century will welcome this book.”

--Dr. George M. Watson, Jr.
Air Force Historical Studies Office,
Washington, DC

The Influence of Air Power Upon History is one of four titles on the Air Force chief of staff’s recommended reading list for officers in the Air Force.

Richard Trout’s fourth novel in The MacGregor Family Adventure Series, Czar of Alaska: The Cross of Charlemagne (9781589803282), is receiving high praise from critics.

“A wonderful book!”
--Clive Cussler, best-selling author

“This novel is full of facts, which Trout expertly weaves in with fiction. We meet characters throughout the Alaskan escapades that teach us about the environmental and political challenges threatening the wilderness. . . . Trout offers an Alaskan tapestry of tales. Written for young adults, adults too will enjoy this romp through the frozen wilderness. After all, I’ve got the first four books on my shelf and look forward to more.”
--True North,

“As in all The MacGregor Family Adventure Series novels, the MacGregors are once again caught in a web of intriguing characters full of danger, deception, and plenty of techno-thrilling surprises.”
--Yukon Review

In a recent issue of American Artist, M. Stephen Doherty wrote an in-depth article praising James R. Kemp’s Rolland Golden: The Journeys of a Southern Artist (9781589802902), saying Golden “offers a new way of seeing and understanding the places we inhabit.”

Times-Picayune book editor Susan Larson said the following about Kemp’s book:

“In this volume, veteran art writer and deputy director of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, John Kemp, presents us with an informative text that illuminates the 196 paintings, created over four decades and inspired by travels throughout America and Europe. . . . Many of the paintings in this book are in private collections, which is an additional incentive to take this artistic and literary journey in the excellent company of Golden and Kemp.”

Reclaiming Liberty (9781589802759) by James Ronald Kennedy:
