NEW ORLEANS LEGEND BUDDY D. DIES
Bernard “Buddy” Diliberto, who covered
the New Orleans sports scene for almost fifty years, died on
January 7,
2005, at the age of seventy-three. The National Sportscasters and
Sportswriters Association named him the Sportscaster of the Year from
Louisiana no less than twelve times. Mr. Diliberto’s close association
with the New Orleans Saints--he had reported on the team since its
inception--culminated in

On February 27, four Pelican
authors will participate in this annual literary event. Beverly Ellen
Schoonmaker Alfeld, author of

at the fair. Pelican’s national
accounts manager, Jan Fehrman, will be on the Publishers’ Panel. Also,
Jan Day and Janeen Mason will speak at the J. D. Parker Elementary
School Parent Teacher Organization in Stuart, Florida, on February 13.
The school purchased a book for every family attending the meeting.
COWBOY CARTOONIST
DIES
Jim Willoughby, author and illustrator of
Cowboy Cartoons: Quick on the
Draw (9781565541412, $4.95 pb), died in December at a hospice near his
home in Prescott, Arizona. The Ohio native spent twenty-one years as an
animator and dabbled in sculpture before beginning his career as an
editorial cartoonist. His work is also featured in several editions of
Pelican’s Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series and in
A Dude’s
Guide to the West (9781565541474, $5.95 pb), which he co-wrote with his
wife, Sue.

John Uglesich, author of
Uglesich’s Restaurant

Gail and Anthony Uglesich’s appearance on Emeril Live has been
postponed until April. The Peligram will announce the exact date

a 2005 Great Lakes Book Award. The eight-year-old prize, which honors
books about the Great Lakes Region, will be awarded in September during
the Great Lakes Bookseller Association trade show in Chicago. Debut
author Cathe Hahn recalled her own visit to Michigan’s Mackinac Island
for this picture book about three Belgian draft horses. Illustrator Bob

CRUISING GUIDE AUTHOR TOUR
Claiborne S. Young will tour the west coast of Florida

Douglas Southall
Freeman’s Daughter Dies
Mary Tyler Freeman Cheek McClenahan, daughter of the two-time Pulitzer
Prize-winning biographer and Civil War historian Douglas Southall
Freeman, died in Richmond on January 16 at the age of eighty-seven. Mrs.
McClenahan, herself a revered civil rights supporter, historical
preservationist, and civic leader, assisted first-time author David
E. Johnson while he researched
