Noteworthy Events

Our publisher, Milburn Calhoun, has just returned from four months in Florence, Italy, where he was made a member of the English Cemetery Library. The cemetery is the resting place of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and many other notable writers, poets, and artists. A library has grown in the caretaker’s cottage, first presided over by Shakespeare’s last known descendents.

Peggy Scott Laborde, author of Canal Street: New Orleans’ Great Wide Way (9781589803374, $39.95), is also the producer of the program Christmas in New Orleans. The PBS documentary focuses on past and present aspects of the holiday from a regional standpoint. Featured segments include Laborde’s urban history book, James Rice’s Cajun Night Before Christmas® (9780882899404, $15.95), and a piece on the beloved Christmas icon Mr. Bingle. Ashleigh Austin, author of St. Tammany Parish Postcards: A Glimpse Back in Time (9781589802476, $10.95), provides a theory on how this Santa’s helper got his name. An essay on the topic is posted on her Web site, http://www.ashleighaustin.com/jingle_jangle.html. Christmas in New Orleans will air on WYES-TV/Channel 12 on Wednesday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and on Sunday, December 24, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
