Cathy C. Post, author of Hurricane Audrey: The Deadly Storm of 1957 (9781589804586, $24.95), addressed the Louisiana State Legislature and the House Chambers at Audrey’s 50th anniversary in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Senator Mount, invoking a rare privilege, introduced Post and recommended her book, which chronicles the stories of six families who survived the storm.


Caryn Yacowitz, author of The Jade Stone: A Chinese Folktale (9781589803596, $15.95), will serve as assistant director for an upcoming play that is based on the book. The musical will run Friday, August 4, and Saturday, August 5, at the Main Street Arts Theater in Saxtons River, Vermont.

The Jade Stone: A Chinese Folktale has been named Best Picture Book by the San Francisco Chronicle and Book Links and was selected for California Collections by California Readers in 2000.


Janeen Mason, author and illustrator of Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles (9781589804340, $15.95), was appointed by Florida Senator Ken Pruitt to the statewide Florida Arts Council board of directors. One of fifteen members, Mason will advise the Secretary of State regarding grant funding for cultural matters throughout Florida.


The History Channel recently aired a program about a series of unexplained sightings in 1897. This event caused speculations that the United States government had started a secret flight program or that life from another world had contacted Earth. This topic is also the passion of author, Michael Busby, who wrote Solving the 1897 Airship Mystery (9781589801257, $24.95).

Richard G. Williams, Jr., author of The Maxims of Robert E. Lee for Young Gentlemen (9781589803107, $12.95 pb), has been asked to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Civil War Chaplains Research Center and Museum Foundation at Liberty University.

After conducting a seminar for Bay District Schools on Thursday, August 9, he will be a keynote speaker for schools in Greensburg, Indiana; Spokane, Washington; Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Woodlands, Texas. The Joy of Y’at Catholicism (9781589804104, $14.95 pb) was the number one best-seller in New Orleans, Louisiana, for the first week of July according to Nielsen BookScan. High sales prompted the second printing of the book, which was first released in April 2007.

Author Earl Higgins will be signing in Louisiana during the month of August. On Saturday, August 4, he will be at the Sam’s Club in Slidell from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Saturday, August 11, he will sign at Borders Books and Music on Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. He will sign at Barnes & Noble in Mandeville on Saturday, August 18, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. The Algiers Point Hubbell Public Library in New Orleans will host Higgins as part of their Pelican author series on Tuesday, August 21, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.


Jan Day, author of The Pirate, Pink (9781565548794, $15.95) and Pirate Pink and Treasures of the Reef (9781589800861, $15.95), will be giving a workshop and signing for the Osceola Public Library’s Author Blitz in Kissimmee, Florida, on Saturday, August 11. In July, Day read and signed Kissimmee Pete, Cracker Cow Hunter (9781589803251, $15.95) at the National Cowboy Festival in Okechobee, Florida.


Richard Trout, author of Sign of the Dragon (9781589804760, $15.95), will attend Encyclomedia in Oklahoma City, from August 29 through August 30. A professor at Oklahoma Community College, Trout was honored with the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for the 2006-2007 school year. Trout will always be remembered for receiving this recognition in the year that marks the Oklahoma Centennial.

Bill Jones, author of Louisiana Cowboys (9781589804531, $45.00), will sign at Barnes & Noble at Citiplace Court in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Saturday, August 14, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Una Belle Townsend, author of Grady’s in the Silo (9781589800984, $15.95), will speak on the Oklahoma author program at Encyclomedia in Oklahoma City, on Thursday, August 30. Townsend was one of twelve Oklahoma authors selected to tour the state in honor of the Centennial year. The literacy event, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Oklahoma Center for the Book, asked participating authors to visit rural areas with populations under 2,000. Townsend is also the author of a forthcoming title, The Oklahoma Land Rush, a child’s story of the 1907 event.
