Noteworthy Events


On October 27, 2007, Lesley Bannatyne set the Guinness World Record for the "largest Halloween gathering." She and a group of sixty-four Halloween witches gathered at Davis Square plaza in Somerville, Massachusetts, to read aloud her children’s book, Witches’ Night Before Halloween ($15.95).


John Broven
, author of South To Louisiana: The Music of the Cajun Bayous ($14.95 pb) and Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans ($13.95 pb), will be moderating a panel on Wednesday, April 30, during the New Orleans Jazz Fest. The What Is Swamp Pop: South Louisiana Rock ’n’ Roll panel at the Ponderosa Stomp Music Conference will contain material that Broven has covered in his books. 


Julie Dupré Buckner
, illustrator of Clovis Crawfish and the Twin Sister ($15.95), Clovis Crawfish and Silvie Sulphur ($15.95), and Clovis Crawfish and Echo Gecko ($15.95), is the featured artist for the month of April at the Lake Charles Children’s Museum in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The show will feature some of her artwork from the Clovis Crawfish Series. Buckner will do a reading and book signing at the museum on April 11.


A showing of the documentary of the book Fate Did Not Let Me Go: A Mother’s Farewell Letter ($5.95), by Valli Ollendorff, will be held in Wroclaw, Poland, on April 7. The event was organized by Lech Walesa the former president of Poland. A similar showing will be hosted by The Jewish Museum in Berlin on April 9. The book and documentary are based on a letter written by Ollendorff to her son a few days before she entered the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1942.

Frank Davis
, author of Frank Davis Makes Good Groceries!: A New Orleans Cookbook ($24.95), was awarded the Lafcadio Hearn Award for his culinary influence on the cuisine and culture of Louisiana and the nation. Davis is the author of a series of cookbooks and is the resident chef and outdoors director for WWL-TV, a CBS affiliate in New Orleans. Lafcadio Hearn’s Creole Cookbook ($19.95), also published by Pelican, is generally considered the first cookbook on New Orleans cuisine.
