Noteworthy Events

Brownies to Die For! (9781589803824, $24.95), by Bev Shaffer, was chosen as a finalist in the cookbook category for Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year 2006. Angler’s Guide to Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico (9781589803886, $35.00), by Jerald Horst and Mike Lane, was chosen as a finalist in the reference category.

An essay by Rose Madeline Mula entitled "Slim Down? Fat Chance!" appears in the March/April issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Mula’s witty style can be found throughout her book, If These Are Laugh Lines, I’m Having Way Too Much Fun (9781589803770, $12.95 pb) a finalist for USABookNews.com’s 2006 Best Book Award in the humor category.


Willow Creek Church and Willow Creek Association have recommended Soul Storm: Finding God Amidst Disaster (9781589804401, $19.99), by Bruce Lee Smith, as a ministry resource. Their endorsement appeared in the March issue of Willow Creek Magazine.

On a Solemn Note

Ralph de Toledano died at age ninety. His Pelican books were Frontiers of Jazz (9781565540439, $13.95 pb), an important critical work, and Apocrypha of Limbo (9781565540668, $14.95), a book of poetry. He was among the last surviving members of the founding era of American Conservatism and is best known for exposing Alger Hiss as a Soviet spy. His book Seeds of Treason was confirmed by the Soviet files after the fall of communism.

 

Phyllis Rossiter Modeland, author of A Living History of the Ozarks (9780882898018, $19.95 pb), passed away in early February 2007.

Cecilia Casrill Dartez and Johnette Downing were featured in Pelican’s booth for the Louisiana Library Association Convention, held March 6-8. Both authors were prepared with flyers advertising their services for school speaking engagements. The Texas Library Association, held April 11-14 in San Antonio, will include appearances by the following Texas children’s book authors and illustrators: Sherry Garland, David Davis, Deborah Ousley Kadair, Sue Marshall Ward, Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton, Dotti Enderle, Lynn Sheffield Simmons, and Ann Parr. All authors will be signing previous titles and promoting new ones. Down in Louisiana (9781589804517, $15.95), illustrated by Deborah Ousley Kadair will be available in spring. A statewide launch of Louisiana in Words (9781589804296, $19.95 pb) will occur Saturday, April 21. Several of the authors who contributed to the literary collection of Louisiana experiences will appear at libraries, bookstores, and museums throughout Louisiana for signings and discussions.
