Note from the Publisher

In the summer of 1980, we received the manuscript for Death at Chappaquiddick ($14.95 pb), by Richard L. and Thomas L. Tedrow. Not much had been reported on the incident in 1969, and I had been disgusted with the Senate when Edward Kennedy returned for the first time after it happened and the body gave him a standing ovation for killing a girl and running away!

The book is a well-researched and complete story of the event. We found an article in an obscure newspaper, written by Donald McLachlan, in which Joseph Kopechne, Mary Jo's father, gave a personal account of what his daughter's loss meant to him. We used it as the book's foreword.

We had guessed that Teddy would announce for president, and the book was published three weeks after his announcement. Our national salesman, a grizzled veteran, said that he had never sold so many books in one week. We think Death at Chappaquiddick was a major instrument in denying Kennedy's presidential bid. We count it as one of the most important books we have ever published.

Noteworthy Events

Three of Pelican's authors will be on hand for signings at the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Trade Show, September 25 through September 27. Edie Hand, a relative of Elvis Presley, will sign copies of the gift book she coauthored, entitled The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories about the King ($14.95). James Everett Kibler will be present with the latest installment of his Clay Bank County Series, The Education of Chauncey Doolittle ($23.00). Also available will be award-winning author John Chandler Griffin with Lt. Bill Farrow: Doolittle Raider ($24.95), Mr. Lincoln and His War ($24.95),  
and Abraham Lincoln's Execution ($29.95).

The International Game Fish Association, located in Dania Beach, Florida, has included The Louisiana Seafood Bible: Shrimp ($25.00), by Jerald and Glenda Horst, as part of its permanent collection.

On September 4, Ronnie McDowell, Joe Meador, and Edie Hand, coauthors of The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories about the King ($14.95), will appear on the Nashville WSMV-TV morning program at 9:00 am. .

Vincenza Scarpaci, author of The Journey of the Italians in America ($40.00), will give a live interview for AM 1240 KNRY on September 2. "News Talk" with Tim Thomas broadcasts from 4:05 to 5:00 pm out of Monterey, CA.

Pelican has recently launched a new Web site to better serve our customers. The site includes improved search and checkout capabilities. Its streamlined design will incorporate many new social media features in the future.

Steven L. Layne, the author of multiple children's and YA books, was recently promoted to professor of literacy education at Judson University in Elgin, IL. Layne's audio version of the young-adult thriller This Side of Paradise ($8.95pb) is scheduled to be released this fall.

This Side of Paradise was the 2002 winner of the Hal Clement Award for Excellence in Children's Science Fiction Literature and received the 2003-04 Texas Lone Star Award.

The Forrest Cavalry Corps History Award Committee has selected Tom C. McKenney's Jack Hinson's One-Man War ($25.95) as the winner of the General Nathan Bedford Forrest Southern History Award of 2009.
