Note from the Publisher

Pelican Publishing is thrilled every time we can educate readers about little-known stories. A recent children’s book acquisition is about an amazing discovery by Reca Jones, the first female president of the Louisiana Archeology Society. When she was still a young housewife, Jones discovered strange mounds near her home. The archeology department of a local university didn’t believe her. As a result, she enrolled, earning her own degree. Her first find turned out to be the internationally known Watson Brake Mounds, the oldest earthworks in North America. A children’s picture book about Jones
and her discovery is forthcoming.

To: Wesley Eure

Differences often keep people apart. A Fish Out of Water ($15.95), by Wesley Eure, is a charming tale of a fish and a bird that develop a friendship. Their obvious differences present a problem: their friends and families disagree with their love for one another. Feeling alone Fish and Bird must solve their dilemma. How can they stay friends and still keep their family and friends happy? Parents and educators will discover that children enthusiastically and compassionately discuss Fish and Bird’s problem and offer creative solutions. It is an excellent opportunity to assure children that despite our differences we all have the same need: the need for love.

The illustrations by the Meredith College Art Department are beautiful. The bright vivid colors draw the young readers to the story.

As an educator, I have used A Fish Out of Water to teach California’s writing standards. My students have written beautiful, heartfelt letters to the characters’ families. They have written paragraphs comparing and contrasting the worlds of Fish and Bird. They have also written paragraphs that describe the characters. The compassion they feel for the dilemma of Fish and Bird motivates their interest and desire in writing. Wesley Eure’s book is a must have in every home, elementary classroom, and library.

Class Adoption

Old Creole Days
($7.99 pb), by George Washington Cable, has been adopted as a required text for the course the South in Literature, which will be taught beginning fall semester 2009 at Gettysburg College.

On A Solemn Note

Dr. Floyd Martin Clay passed away on September 5. A beloved history professor at Our Lady of Holy Cross College, Clay also taught at the University of New Orleans, Delgado Community College, and the University of Arkansas. He was affectionately referred to as "the nutty professor" because of his eccentricities. Clay is the author of Coozan Dudley Leblanc: From Huey Long to Hadacol.

Toby Belfer Learns about Heroes and Martyrs ($14.95),
by Gloria Teles Pushker and Mel Tarman.

"The book is well written with clear explanations of new terms. The tense, dramatic individual adventures pit moral goodness against the tragedy of the Holocaust. An excellent, healing book for children ages 9 to 12."

The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories About the King ($14.95),
By Ronnie McDowell, Edie Hand, and Joe Meador.

"Slim and trim (like young Elvis!), this catchy little tribute to the King is a fascinating roundup of firsthand recollections from people who knew him, rare fly-on-the-wall photos from Presley’s early days of stardom, and a selection of Elvis portraits by country singer Ronnie McDowell, whose musical career was built on a 1977 hit about the recently deceased superstar, ‘The King is Gone.’"
