Noteworthy Events

Jack Hinson's One-Man War ($25.95), by Tom C. McKenney, has been chosen as a finalist in the History/United States category for the National Best Books 2009 Awards sponsored by USA Book News.

Lt. Col. Tom C. McKenney recounts Jack Hinson's extraordinary feats as a lone Confederate sniper. After a unit of Union occupation troops moved in on his land and summarily captured, executed, and placed the decapitated heads of his sons on his gateposts, Hinson abandoned his quiet life for one of revenge.

Rose Madeline Mula's forthcoming book The Beautiful People and Other Aggravations ($14.95 pb) was a finalist in the Humor category for the National Best Books 2009 Awards.

In her signature self-deprecating and hilarious style, humor essayist Rose Madeline Mula gripes about growing old. In this collection of comical compositions, readers can skip around from one laugh-out-loud essay to the next while enjoying the author's endless wit and charm.

Mula also recently published her latest article for The Saturday Evening Post. In this laugh-out-loud article, she wonders, "What will they think of next?" House plants that walk to the sink and drink when they're thirsty? Or a shopping cart that will roll to the store and collect your groceries (or at least one with wheels that roll in the same direction)? Who knows? Mula sure has some ideas!

David Davis won third place in the Writer's Digest 78th Annual Writing Competition for his children's story "Black Diamond." Davis is the author of several children's titles, including four books in Pelican's Night Before Christmas Series ($15.95). In his most recent title, Texas Aesop's Fables ($15.95), Davis retells age-old lessons about life, fairness, and honesty with a Texas twist.

Ronnie McDowell and Edie Hand, coauthors of The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories about the King ($14.95), will appear for a live in-studio interview on the "Joey Reynolds Show" at 10:00 pm on Friday, November 6. Now the #1 late-night radio talk show in NY, they broadcast live in the New York Tri-State area from midnight to 1:00 am and are carried by one hundred stations nationally from 1:00 am to 5:00 am.

Peggy Scott Laborde, coauthor of Christmas in New Orleans ($39.95), will have a TV interview at 1:30 pm on November 16 with Tom Bagwill on WLAE's Greater New Orleans.

Why Things Go Wrong: Deming Philosophy in a Dozen Ten-Minute Sessions ($16.95), by Gary Fellers, has been adopted by the University of Illinois's Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering for the class IE 330, Quality Control. The principles of W. Edwards Deming are taught regularly in business schools and include manager-employee relationships, interdepartmental coordination, and quality management. Deming was a key consultant in management circles with clients including Ford, GM, and Dow Chemicals. He was also the innovator of the "just in time" industrial plan that Japan adopted in the 1950s.

Pelican has made Christmas shopping easy this year with our NEW WEB SITE. Shopping carts are easily located at the top right-hand corner of the screen and customers can now search for keywords from inside the book. If cookies are on your mind this season, a quick search will not only bring up such treasures as Cookies to Die For! ($26.95) and The 100 Greatest Desserts of the South ($14.95 pb), but every book that mentions cookies. We're adding new features all the time, so watch for updates in future newsletters and on Twitter.
