Note from the Publisher

I talked with Pelican author Elizabeth Schlappi this week. Schlappi is a docent for the Star of India, the world’s oldest active ship. It is an iron-hulled three-mast ship, which was launched in 1863. The Maritime Museum of San Diego is preparing to take the historic ship to the East Coast for the tall ship rendezvous, having gone last in 1976.

She is the proud owner of a 1958 Chevrolet Impala named "Yankee," which is the only car she has ever owned. A complete article about Schlappi and "Yankee" can be found at http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080614/news_lz1dd14impala.html

Schlappi is the author of Roy Acuff: The Smoky Mountain Boy ($14.95 pb). Acuff was the first living performer to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

On A Solemn Note

Coleen Salley passed away in mid-September after a struggle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Salley is the narrator of the Cajun Night After Christmas/Cajun Night Before Christmas audiocassette ($9.95). Her children’s book Who’s That Tripping Over My Bridge? ($15.95) was recently chosen as an Accelerated Reader Selection.

Caitlin Smith, school sales manager for Pelican Publishing says of her: "Once you met Coleen, she was impossible to forget. She was truly one of a kind, and her passing is a great loss. In a way, Coleen is responsible for my own love of books. She was my mother’s children’s literature professor in college and drilled into her the importance of reading to children. Had it not been for Coleen, I might not be in publishing today—what a strange coincidence that I work for her first publisher!"
