Glen Pitre, author of Belizaire the Cajun ($10.95 pb), is also a coproducer of the wetlands documentary Harvest to Restore: America’s Coast Heartland. The film aired statewide in Louisiana on LPB in September and addressed the environmental effects of coastal land loss in Louisiana. Pitre also wrote and directed The Man Who Came Back, a Western, which was shown at Canal Place Cinema as part of the New Orleans Film Festival on October 15. |

New Orleans photographer Michael P. Smith passed away in September. A gifted artist, he "defined the look of Jazz Fest," according to the festival’s producer, Quint Davis. Some of his work remains as a permanent collection within the Smithsonian, Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Historic New Orleans Collection, as well as other important archives. Smith is the author of Jazz Fest Memories ($19.95 pb), Mardi Gras Indians ($39.95), New Orleans Jazz Fest: A Pictorial History ($22.95), and Spirit World: Pattern in the Expressive Folk Culture of African-American New Orleans ($25.00 pb). |
