Noteworthy Events

Children’s picture book author Johnette Downing, author of My Aunt Came Back from Louisiane ($15.95), has been selected as one of the Women of the Year 2008 by New Orleans CityBusiness Magazine. An announcement in the magazine’s November 24 issue will honor her for her innovation, energy, ideas, achievements, and commitment to excellence. A children’s performer, Downing is also the author of Down in Louisiana ($15.95), and Today Is Monday in Louisiana ($15.95). The recently released My Aunt Came Back from Louisiane is the first book she has both written and illustrated.



Expert ghost hunter Jeff Dwyer will discuss his new book, Ghost Hunter’s Guide to California’s Wine Country ($15.95 pb), on the KAPS Paranormal Radio Show, broadcast by the Para X Radio Network and the CBS Radio Network, on November 23 at 9:00 pm.



Charline R. McCord
and Judy H. Tucker, editors of Christmas Stories from the South’s Best Writers ($15.95), will be talking about their book on WLOX-TV, the Biloxi, MS, ABC affiliate, on November 21 at 4:15 pm.



On November 23, Beverly Ellen Schoonmaker Alfeld will serve as one of three judges at the International Pickle Festival in Rosendale, New York. Her two books, Pickles to Relish ($24.95) and The Jamlady Cookbook ($35.00) will be available for sale at a booth manned by the author’s mother.


Peter J. Welling
, the author of Darlene Halloween and the Great Chicago Fire ($15.95), participated in an annual auction, the Buckaroo Bash, on October 25. Welling designed a cowboy hat featuring his character as well as donated a book to the Eiteljorg Museum of America Indians and Western Art in Eiteljorg, Indiana, for the event. The museum’s staff members were "thrilled to have it in the auction," according to Jan Van Velse-McHugh, the event’s coordinator. The proceeds from Welling’s contribution will help fund educational outreach programs for Indiana school children.


On November 10, fifty copies of The Thanksgiving Bowl ($15.95) by Virginia Kroll will be used in an on-air promotional give-away for the nationally broadcast radio program, The Dr. Laura Show. 

The book's illustrator, Philomena O’Neill, will display original art from The Thanksgiving Bowl ($15.95) as part of Seattle, Washington’s, November Ballard Art Walk. The paintings will remain on display at the Secret Garden Bookshop at 2214 NW Market St. through the month.


Glen Pitre
, author of Belizaire the Cajun ($10.95 pb), is also a coproducer of the wetlands documentary Harvest to Restore: America’s Coast Heartland. The film aired statewide in Louisiana on LPB in September and addressed the environmental effects of coastal land loss in Louisiana.

Pitre also wrote and directed The Man Who Came Back, a Western, which was shown at Canal Place Cinema as part of the New Orleans Film Festival on October 15.

On A Solemn Note

New Orleans photographer Michael P. Smith passed away in September. A gifted artist, he "defined the look of Jazz Fest," according to the festival’s producer, Quint Davis. Some of his work remains as a permanent collection within the Smithsonian, Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Historic New Orleans Collection, as well as other important archives. Smith is the author of Jazz Fest Memories ($19.95 pb), Mardi Gras Indians ($39.95), New Orleans Jazz Fest: A Pictorial History ($22.95), and Spirit World: Pattern in the Expressive Folk Culture of African-American New Orleans ($25.00 pb).
