A Note From the Publisher

May 1 marks the 119th McDonogh Day Celebration. Pelican Publishing Company sits on a portion of John McDonogh’s plantation, and he was buried in the cemetery a block away from our offices.

Known as a miser and unmarried when he died in 1850, McDonogh left his huge estate to the children of New Orleans and Baltimore. Forty-one schools, black and white, were built, founding the public-school system of New Orleans. He also endowed an orphanage in Baltimore, now a leading preparatory school.

All he asked in return was that children remember him with flowers on his grave annually. His name has been removed from thirty-eight of the schools, and only McDonogh No. 26 Elementary School students still honor him.

Noteworthy Events

Four Pelican authors and illustrators will be attending BookExpo America in New York, May 28-31. Mel Tarman, coauthor of the middle reader Toby Belfer Learns About Heroes and Martyrs ($14.95), will be in attendance as well as Bev Shaffer, author of Cookies to Die For! ($26.95). Jan Day and Janeen Mason, the author/illustrator team of The World’s Greatest Explorer ($15.95),
will also be on hand.

Children’s author and talented musician, Johnette Downing will perform in the Kids Tent during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 2. Her trusty guitar will also accompany her on the Children’s Stage at Baton Rouge’s Fest for All on May 3. Downing will sign and eagerly promote her four picture books, including My Aunt Came Back from Louisiane ($15.95) at these events.

Award-winning children’s author Steven L. Layne will put down his pen to step into the recording booth this month. The popular IRA speaker will lend his voice to two of his picture books, My Brother Dan’s Delicious ($15.95) and Love the Baby ($15.95). This two-track CD is the latest in Pelican’s Audio Library. Pelican is in the process of transferring audiocassette selections to compact disk format. Newly available CD selections include business books by Zig Ziglar and Kevin Hogan and the beloved Gaston® Series by James Rice.

Effective May 29, Frank McGuire will retire from Pelican Publishing Company after eighteen years on staff. Prior to serving as Pelican’s southeastern sales representative, McGuire managed Siler’s Bookstore in New Orleans and was the southeastern rep for Crown Publishing Group. In Atlanta, he managed Oxford Books, his own McGuire’s Bookshop, and created the prototype store for Chapter Eleven Books. His distinguished bookselling career has spanned nearly four decades.

"It’s been a privilege to work with so many who love books," McGuire offers, "and I’m confident that passion will carry the book industry forward, meeting the opportunities of a digital age. Books foster understanding and hence justice."

Donald L. Gilmore, the author of Riding Vengeance with the James Gang ($23.00), will give a ten-minute radio interview on WDIS 1170-AM. It will broadcast out of Norfolk, MA, on May 4, at 9:40 am.
