Noteworthy Events


Pelican Publishing Company, Inc. has announced the promotion of Katherine Szadziewicz from promotion associate to promotion director. Szadziewicz joined Pelican in 2008 and has displayed an exemplary skill in her position. She graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with degrees in comparative literature and English. Enjoying her new home in New Orleans, she displays her talents with the clarinet as a member of the New Orleans Concert Band and as a volunteer with the University of New Orleans Wind Ensemble.




Stephen Rea
, author of Finn McCool’s Football Club: The Birth, Death, and Resurrection of a Pub Soccer Team in the City of the Dead ($24.95), will appear on Good Morning New Orleans. The show will broadcast on ABC26 on Friday, March 6, at 5:30 pm.



Kit Wohl
, author of New Orleans Classic Gumbos and Soups ($15.95), will moderate the Great Gumbo Throwdown at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival. The event will feature chef Greg Reggio of the notorious Taste Buds. The two will compete to prepare a gumbo fit for the most-refined palates. The Gumbo Throwdown takes place on Sunday, March 29, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Ritz-Carlton.



John W. Scott
, author of Natalie Scott: A Magnificent Life ($25.00), will serve on the Jazzed Age panel at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in New Orleans, LA. He and other panelists, including Chance Harvey, author of The Life and Selected Letters of Lyle Saxon ($24.95), will discuss Sherwood Anderson. The event will be held on Sunday, March 29, at 11:30 am at Muriel’s Jackson Square Restaurant.

Virginia Walton Pilegard, author of The Warlord’s Series, which includes the BookSense 76 Selection The Warlord’s Puzzle ($15.95), will have art from her books displayed at a children’s literature conference at the University of San Francisco. Reading the World XI, A Conference Celebrating Multicultural Literature for Children and Young Adults will be held March 28-29. A dinner presentation given by Angelica Carpenter, the curator of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature, will include artwork from Pilegard’s books, which were all illustrated by Nicolas Debon. The author’s forthcoming title The Emperor’s Army is about the famous underground terra-cotta army that the emperor had made to guard his grave.



On Sunday, March 22, the Historic New Orleans Collection will present the film Belizaire the Cajun as part of their Cajuns on the Silver Screen film series. Producer Glen Pitre, author of Belizaire the Cajun  
($10.95 pb), will be on hand to lead a discussion at the showing. 

Awards

Ghost Hunter’s Guide to Indianapolis ($14.95 pb), by Lorri Sankowsky and Keri Young, received an honorable mention in Haunted America Tours’ Ten Most Haunted Paranormal Books 2008.


Sherry Garland’s The Buffalo Soldier ($15.95) received a 2009 Citation from the San Antonio Conservation Society.

Janice Shay’s Charleston Classic Desserts ($15.95) will be featured as one of Southern Lady magazine’s "Cookbooks Worth Collecting" in their special March/April entertaining issue.


Rose Mula, the author of If These Are Laugh Lines, I'm Having Way Too Much Fun ($12.95 pb), will publish an essay in the March issue of the Saturday Evening Post.
