A Letter to the Author |

Dear Janeen, Thank you for forwarding your lovely book Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles, with you as both author and illustrator--a tour de force! As I read the book to four classes of first graders last Friday, I was increasingly amazed by the tremendous amount of information contained, the beauty of the presentation, and the way the illustrations reinforced the content. GYRE is a delightful new word introduced by the book. Gyroscope and the
gyrations of physically active youngsters are both It is amazing what a book like yours does for opening up a whole area of interest for students and teachers. This week I noticed a newspaper article about the Loggerhead turtle who presented herself in need of medical attention at the University of Florida docks (it didn't say on which coast). Now she is being treated in Gainesville. Perhaps elementary school librarians are especially aware of the power of the beautifully written and illustrated book for children to help change the world. That's one reason I have moved to elementary teaching after years teaching in college, high school, and middle school. Karen West |
