Noteworthy Events

Not very many people get the opportunity to see the inside workings of a publishing company firsthand. But this summer, everyone seems to be interested in Pelican. Liz Reyes, a New Orleans ABC26 reporter, interviewed publisher Milburn Calhoun as well as a few of Pelican's local authors. Leah Chase, author of The Dooky Chase Cookbook ($23.00), and Diane de Las Casas, author of The Cajun Cornbread Boy ($15.95), dropped by for the interview. A clip of the program can be viewed at http://www.abc26.com/video/?clipId=3849785&topVideoCatNo=154236&c=&autoStart=true&activePane=info&

In an attempt to make Pelican's quality books more readily available, we are making some of them available in CD format. Zig Ziglar's See You at the Top: 25th Anniversary Edition Revised and Updated($25.00) and The Psychology of Persuasion: How to Persuade Others to Your Way of Thinking ($24.95), by Kevin Hogan, are just two of the books that will be available to our listening audience this month. A selection of children's books, including the Clovis Crawfish Series can also be ordered in CD format from our Web site, www.pelicanpub.com.

Tom C. McKenney and Rickey Pittman will join Pelican at the Sons of Confederate Veterans Convention this summer. From July 22 to July 25, the 2009 reunion will gather in Hot Springs, Arkansas. McKenney will sign Jack Hinson's One-Man War ($25.95) in the Pelican booth. Pittman will sign his children's books Jim Limber Davis: A Black Orphan in the Confederate White House ($15.95) and The Scottish Alphabet ($15.95) and his short-story anthology Stories of the Confederate South ($12.95 pb).

In Louisiana, seafood festivals are abundant and children's author Johnette Downing is not one to miss a party. She will be present at the Mandeville Seafood Festival with guitar in hand as well as her picture books, My Aunt Came Back from Louisiane ($15.95), and Chef Creole ($15.95). On Friday, July 3, she will perform on the Kids Stage at Fontainebleau State Park from 1:15 until 3:00 pm. On Sunday, July 5, she'll give a second performance from 3:15 until 5:00 pm.

Alison Hoffman Lane, author of Uncle Arnel and the Swamp Witch ($15.95), will also attend the festival. She will read her children's book during story time on July 3 between 3:00 and 6:00 pm.

Vincenza Scarpaci, author of The Journey of the Italians in America ($40.00), is giving an encore New York signing tour this July after her successful appearances in the northeast last fall. She will lecture and sign books at various libraries, bookstores, and cultural centers, including the Westchester Italian Cultural Center in Tuckahoe.

Scarpaci will be interviewed on WHPC Radio, "Profumi d'Italia," a Long Island Italian-interest program on July 23. The interview will be broadcast out of Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY, at a time yet to be decided.

Country music star Ronnie McDowell, one of the authors of Pelican's upcoming book The Genuine Elvis: Photos and Untold Stories about the King ($14.95), is busy on tour this month with concerts in Ohio, West Virginia, Missouri, Indiana, Arkansas, Georgia, and Louisiana. This Elvis-inspired artist will take time off touring to launch his book at Graceland during Elvis Week next month. Please stay tuned for more details about the event in the August Peligram.

Pelican received a positive response at this year's Book Expo America, which was held in New York from May to June. The most popular title by far was Cookies to Die For! ($24.95), by Bev Shaffer. Staff members distributed 100 copies in the first 30 minutes of the show. The spring 2009 title follows Shaffer's first book with Pelican Brownies to Die For! ($24.95), which appeared in People magazine's Mother's Day Gift Guide.

A Letter to the Author

One teacher was particularly impressed with Janeen Mason's Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles ($15.95).

Dear Janeen,

Thank you for forwarding your lovely book Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles, with you as both author and illustrator--a tour de force!

As I read the book to four classes of first graders last Friday, I was increasingly amazed by the tremendous amount of information contained, the beauty of the presentation, and the way the illustrations reinforced the content.

GYRE is a delightful new word introduced by the book. Gyroscope and the gyrations of physically active youngsters are both in my vocabulary, but having the water circulation in the North Atlantic as a root for the word added a whole new image. Thank you also for including a glossary, so the new words can be accurately explained to the various age levels (including the adult readers.)

It is amazing what a book like yours does for opening up a whole area of interest for students and teachers. This week I noticed a newspaper article about the Loggerhead turtle who presented herself in need of medical attention at the University of Florida docks (it didn't say on which coast). Now she is being treated in Gainesville.

Perhaps elementary school librarians are especially aware of the power of the beautifully written and illustrated book for children to help change the world. That's one reason I have moved to elementary teaching after years teaching in college, high school, and middle school.
