Noteworthy Events


Kitty Morse, author of The California Farm Cookbook (9780882899114, $26.95), attended the International Fancy Food and Confection Show® for her famous farm-fresh recipes. The thirty-third annual Fancy Food Show® took place in the San Diego Convention Center in January. Morse is the author of nine cookbooks and has written articles for several culinary magazines including Cooking Light and Health.


Kay Shaw Nelson, author of The Art of Scottish-American Cooking (9781589803862, $21.00), will be speaking at the Twelfth Annual Scottish Symposium in Williamsburg, Virginia. The event will be held at the College of William & Mary on Febuary 22 through February 24. The school, founded by Scotsman James Blair, is arranging for the Scottish Coalition USA to showcase its materials and memorabilia in the Swem Library archives.

Steven L. Layne, author of the newly reprinted young adult novel Mergers (9781589805385, $8.95 pb) as well as several children’s books, will serve as keynote speaker for the Colorado Council of the International Reading Council in Denver on Saturday, February 9. Layne’s speech, "Balcony People: Teachers Make the Difference," examines the role teachers play in children’s lives.

Layne will deliver the same speech on Thursday evening, February 21 at the Nebraska State Reading Seminar in Kearney. The theme of the seminar is "Literacy Journey: Share Your Passion." He is also the author of The Teacher’s Night Before Christmas, (9781565548336, $15.95) and This Side of Paradise (9781589800960, $15.99).

Dotti Enderle, author of The Cotton Candy Catastrophe at the Texas State Fair (9781589801899, $15.95), will sign at the first annual Pancakes & Pajamas Barnyard Bash in Sugar Land, Texas, on Saturday, February 9. Organized by the Fort Bend Junior Service League, the event will take place at the Honor Roll School on Sweet Water Boulevard, and the proceeds will benefit the ESCAPE Family Resource Center. Enderle will also be signing her latest book, The Fat Stock Stampede at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (9781589804432, $15.95).

The spring issue of Jewish Book World, available February 28, will feature a review of Haggadah Illuminated (9781589804951, $19.95), a Hebrew-language version of the Seder which memorializes the exodus from Egypt. Hand-written by Even Caredio with illustrations by Guglielomo Bigi Benajá, the Haggadah is read as part of Jewish Passover traditions.


Acadian Plantation Country Cookbook (9781589804623, $25.00), by Anne Butler, will be mentioned in the February issue of House and Home magazine. A few of the book’s interior photos will also be included.


Mary Cassatt: Impressionist Painter (9781589804524, $15.95), by Lois V. Harris, will be reviewed in the February/March issue of ForeWord Magazine.


February’s issue of Fort Bend Focus Magazine will contain a feature article on 200 Texas Outlaws and Lawmen: 1835-1935 (9781589805149, $16.95 pb), by Laurence Yadon with Dan Anderson.

On A Solemn Note


Pelican author Devereaux D. Cannon, Jr. passed away in his home state of Tennessee last December. Cannon was an expert in the field of vexillology—the study of flags—and an ardent Civil War historian. He is the author of several Civil War books, including The Wit and Wisdom of Robert E. Lee (9781565542754, $5.95 pb), and a series of illustrated books on Civil War-era flags.


World War II veteran Edward "Eddie" Schoenberger passed away in October 2007 at the age of ninety-two. Schoenberger was a contributor to the original edition of Pelican’s Gumbo Ya-Ya (9780882896458, $19.95 pb), a collection of folk tales and customs from Louisiana. An avid art enthusiast and painter, he is the creator of the mural art on the history of printing found at the New Orleans Public Library. At the time of its creation, it was the largest single-canvas mural in the nation. He was twenty-six years old at the time. He is also the founder of the Wausau, Wisconsin Festival of Arts, established in 1965.
