Noteworthy Events

Pelican Publishing Company, Inc. has announced the promotion of Kathleen Calhoun Nettleton from promotion director to assistant to the publisher. Nettleton joined Pelican in 1983 and has served as a board member for the Publishers Association of the South and is on the Smaller and Independent Publishers committee for the Association of American Publishers. Nettleton has served as the company’s promotion director since 1985. One of her favorite Pelican titles is Portraits of Extraordinary Women ($19.95), by William F. Maestri.


A documentary featuring Harold Baumgarten will air on the National Weather Channel from December 7 to December 12. The series, When Weather Changed History, airs at 9:00 pm et/pt and will explore the effects weather had on the events of June 6, 1944. Baumgarten, the author of D-Day Survivor: An Autobiography ($25.00), was one of only two men from his boat who survived and, at the age of nineteen, witnessed an astonishing number of casualties within the first fifteen minutes of landing.



December 17 marks the seventy-third anniversary of the first flight of a DC-3 plane. Thirteen years after the 1935 christening, three of the aircraft flew over the Iron Curtain in an operation known as the Berlin Airlift. The eleven-month West Berlin rescue mission, after the Soviet Army blockades, is chronicled in The Berlin Airlift: The Salvation of a City ($24.95), by Jon Sutherland and Diane Canwell.


Leah Chase has been called the chef to the Civil Rights movement. She has served barbecue ribs to "Big Daddy" Martin Luther King, Jr., steak to Ed Lombard, and gumbo to President-elect Barack Obama. Chase, in a New Orleans Times Picayune article featuring a picture of her hugging Obama at her restaurant, recalls telling the former senator not to put hot sauce in the gumbo. She is the owner of Dooky Chase restaurant. Her gumbo recipe, now the choice of presidents, can be found in one of her two cookbooks, And Still I Cook ($23.00) and The Dooky Chase Cookbook ($23.00).

Jude W. Theriot served as a guest chef in the thirteenth annual Epcot® International Food and Wine Festival that was held October 19. With his wife Deborah as sous chef, Theriot cooked for a group of 1,400, during the event’s "Party for the Senses." During the party, he made Pork and Sausage Jambalaya and Eggplant Deborah. He also prepared three food demonstrations, one of Hot Crabmeat Dip and two with Sausage Caramel, his signature dish. Theriot’s crowd-pleasing meals and appetizers can be found in his cookbooks: The 100 Greatest Cajun Recipes ($14.95 pb), Cajun Healthy ($24.95), Cajun Low-Carb ($24.95), Cajun Quick ($24.95), La Cuisine Cajun ($18.95), 
and New American Light Cuisine ($12.95).


Gourmet
magazine will film an online exclusive video with Kit Wohl and John Besh. Wohl’s cookbook, New Orleans Classic Gumbos and Soups ($15.95), the latest in Pelican’s Classics Recipes Series was chosen as their February Cookbook Club Selection. The book features gumbos and soups from renowned New Orleans’ restaurants such as Crab and Corn Bisque from Besh’s Lüke. A crew will film Besh and Wohl cooking in their respective homes, making the video available for viewing on the magazine’s Web site.


Barbara Kissinger
, the author of Mother Goose of Yesteryear ($19.95), Christmas Merrymaking ($19.95), and Christmas Past ($19.95), will give a radio interview about her nostalgic keepsakes on December 10 from 9:06 to 9:30 am. The interview will air on KOKX 1310 am and KRNQ 96.3 fm, out of Keokuk, IA. Kissinger’s books feature beautiful artwork taken from her collection of postcards, greeting cards, and advertisements from the Victorian age through the early twentieth century.


David Davis
will be reading Librarian’s Night Before Christmas ($15.95) at the Librarian’s Christmas party in Bedford, TX. The party will be held for the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District, and each of the approximately forty attendees will receive a copy of the children’s picture book as 
a Christmas gift.


Patricia Hall
, the author of six books about Raggedy Ann and Andy, has a new CD of children’s songs called Jump On Up! Filled with folk tunes, camp songs, blues, and ballads, the CD is in the running for a possible Grammy nomination in the Best Children’s Recording category. Some of the songs she’s written go with her books The Real-For-Sure Story Of Raggedy Ann ($15.95) and The Honest-to-Goodness Story Of Raggedy Andy ($15.95).

Foreign Rights

Manjul Publishing House in India bought Marathi language rights to See You at the Top: 25th Anniversary Edition ($25.00), by Zig Ziglar.

Thai language rights to Walter Doyle Staples’ Power to Win ($21.95) were sold to Tree Publishing Co., Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand.

Verlag Hans Huber purchased German language rights to Self-Destruction Made Easy ($14.95 pb), by Bill L. Little.

Karisma Publishing Group purchased Indonesian language rights to Power to Win ($21.95), by Walter Doyle Staples, and Steps to the Top ($23.00), by Zig Ziglar.

A review of The Guadalcanal Air War: Col. Jefferson DeBlanc’s Story ($24.95), by Jefferson J. DeBlanc, will appear in WWII History’s December issue.
