Deb Fowler, a top-ranking Amazon reviewer had this to say about the heartwarming children's book: "The tale is lively and exciting and the impressive illustrations and will catch the eye of young and old alike. The Irish have a special gift for storytelling and you won't be disappointed with Joyce Stengel's rendition of a bit of Irish folklore!" |

Interns are flocking to the Gretna Pelican office. We have a record number this summer: nine, with seven at one time. Students are interested in the industry for a variety of reasons. "The best part," says Shelita Dalton, a local who is planning to enter the magazine industry and publish her own books some day, "is that we get to do things that matter, work that the staff would have to do themselves if we weren't here." Sharp minds and positive attitudes are always welcome at Pelican. For anyone interested in a fall or summer internship with the company, application guidelines are available at http://www.pelicanpub.com/interngd.htm. |
A Letter from a Soldier |

A
letter from an active duty soldier praises the musical performance of
Pelican author and music superstar
"This morning I got up at 0500 and
proceeded to the gym to get some exercise. I got there at 0530 and decided
I would exercise on the elliptical machine. The TV was on Fox News. At
0600, Mike Huckabee came on. He stated that the program would be a
tribute to our country. Keep in mind that what we are watching at 0600 is
being broadcast on the East Coast back home at 11 pm, Sunday, July 5. So
here we are, a bunch of soldiers, working out on these exercise machines,
watching Huckabee and his patriotic show. "He had Lee Greenwood and his band sing and play. Of course in Lee Greenwood tradition, the song was God Bless the U.S.A. As the song began, we just continued exercising. Beside me was a rather large, jolly man with a strong Spanish accent. He appeared to be Puerto Rican. When we got the chorus, this man started singing at the top of his lungs, 'I'm proud to be an American' with this Spanish accent. Then he stopped his machine and stood beside it at attention and continued to sing. Suddenly, others stopped exercising and joined in. I did too. Then this big Hispanic soldier puts his arm around my shoulders in an 'man's hug.' He sang louder. So did everybody else. All of the machines had ceased by this time and we all joined together, arms on one another's shoulders singing, 'I'll proudly stand up next to her and defend her still today.' these are soldiers who truly were 'defending her today, this very day on foreign soil in a combat zone. The big guy beside me had
tears streaming down his face. So did others, so did I. Maybe not big
elephant tears, but my --Maj. Sgt. Rodney Whaley Lee Greenwood is the recipient of a Patriot's Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the Academy of Country Music's Male Vocalist of the Year, and the Air Force American Spirit Award. He has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees plus an appointment as brevet major general of the U.S. Air Force. Greenwood has released sixteen albums and performs worldwide throughout the year.
