The 2008 Summer Olympics begin this month in Beijing, and the media is already causing a stir. Although protests precede this year’s games, controversy over the Olympics has persisted throughout history. In Olympic Black Women ($17.95), Martha Ward Plowden chronicles the struggles and accomplishments of African American women who have participated in the games since 1932.

Rosemary K. Updyke continues the Olympic buzz with her biography, Jim Thorpe: The Legend Remembered ($17.95 pb). After overcoming personal loss and obstacles, Thorpe competed in the 1912 Olympic Games and won gold medals in both the decathlon and the pentathlon. When presenting Thorpe with his medals, King Gustav of Sweden proclaimed him "the greatest athlete in the world!"

Chef extraordinaire Bev Shaffer was reviewed in the summer 2008 edition of the Ohioana Quarterly, Ohio’s book review journal. The article featured Shaffer’s Mustard Seed Market and Café Natural Foods Cookbook ($29.95).

Pelican has negotiated foreign contracts for the titles The Amazing Law of Influence ($21.00), by King Duncan, and Parenting the Office ($23.00), by Doris S. Davidoff, Philip G. Davidoff, Donald M. Davidoff, and Douglas G. Davidoff. Beijing Zhongzhibowen Book Publishing Co., Ltd. will print the books in Chinese Simplified Characters.

Bill L. Little, author of Prevention: The Ultimate Cure ($14.95 pb) and The Secret and Spirituality ($12.95 pb), appeared on KSIM radio on Wednesday, July 16. The station broadcasts from Cape Girardeau, MO.

John Uglesich, and his parents Anthony and Gail, appeared on Fox 13 WHBQ-TV’s morning show in Memphis, TN, on Friday, July 11. They gave a cooking demonstration, featuring recipes from their books, Cooking with the Uglesiches ($24.95) and Uglesich’s Restaurant Cookbook ($24.95).

Beverly Ellen Schoonmaker Alfeld will appear as a regular vendor at Huntley’s Farmers Market in Huntley, IL. The market is held every Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Alfeld is the author of The Jamlady Cookbook ($35.00) and Pickles to Relish ($24.95), which were featured this month on www.thenibble.com.

Pelican author Susan Mason was interviewed on Martha Stewart Living Radio. The interview centered on her cookbook, Susan Mason’s Silver Service ($34.95), cowritten with Barrie Scardino. Mason will appear on Paula’s Home Cooking, hosted by Paula Deen, on the Food Network later this summer, and she will cook some recipes from her cookbook.

Walter J. Boyne, author of The Influence of Air Power Upon History ($29.95), was featured prominently in a presentation delivered by Air Force Association president and CEO Michael M. Dunn. Recently, journalist Marni Jameson wrote a heartfelt "Letter to New Orleans" in her nationally syndicated column, featured in the InsideOut insert of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. She highlighted the struggles the Crescent City continues to endure in its recovery from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Ghost Hunter’s Guide to Indianapolis ($14.95 pb), by Lorri Sankowsky and Keri Young, was reviewed by ghostvillage.com. The review called Ghost Hunter’s Guide to Indianapolis a "fine book" and praises "the accurate, concise manner in which the authors handle the material and share it in a meaningful manner with the readers." Radio icon Doc Kirby from WTBF AM-FM in Troy, AL, featured a positive review of Berlin Airlift: The Salvation of a City ($24.95), by Jon Sutherland and Diane Canwell, on his show, "Book Bits." The review aired on June 26.

Reference & Research Book News will feature several Pelican titles in their August 2008 edition.
